She learned cosmetics chemistry while getting her science degree, and set out to develop a product in her lab that didn't contain plastics. Brianne decided that switching from liquid products to solid ones would help respond to the plastic waste and wastewater problems. The result? Ethique is a New Zealand beauty brand founded by biochemist Brianne West in 2012. It's a zero waste company that makes and sells shampoo bars and conditioner bars, nappy rash creams, as well as spray concentrate bars for kitchen and bathroom use. They also have shower bar containers made from 100% biodegradable materials.
