Peter Handstein was only four years old when he learned a valuable lesson from his great aunt Marie. It only took building a sandcastle and seeing it in ruins to realise that things can easily break down. But she made him see that to have the desire to create and build again is something no one can ever destroy.

Peter's childhood experiences, along with the guidance of Marie, shaped his beliefs regarding the power of play. This ultimately led to the founding of Hape when he became an adult.

To be FSC certified means the independent organisation has verified that the wood they use on their toys come from a sustainably managed forest.

Their wooden toys for babies traditionally consisted of wood like maple and beechwood. But they now use many other renewable materials for new generation Hape toys. They now include bamboo, Green PE (a bioplastic made from sustainable sugar cane), Fasal (synthesised from wood powder), softwood synthesised from the bark of corkwood, and natural rubber - all renewable, safe, and eco friendly.

Some toy materials can be toxic and can contain harmful chemicals like BPA, phthalates, formaldehyde, lead, and other heavy metals.
