How We Choose Safer, Natural Products
At Hello Charlie, we believe choosing products for your family should feel simple, safe and honest. That is why every product we stock is carefully considered before it reaches our shelves.
We are not here to stock every “natural” or “eco” product we can find. We are here to help Australian families choose better products with less guesswork — from eco nappies and wipes to natural baby care, eco toys, maternity essentials and eco home products.
Our approach is simple: we look beyond marketing claims, check the details, and only choose products we feel comfortable recommending to our own families.
We Start With One Question: Is It Actually Needed?
Before we look at ingredients, packaging or certifications, we ask whether the product is genuinely useful. Babies and families do not need more clutter, more gimmicks or more products pretending to solve problems they do not really have.
If a product feels unnecessary, poorly designed or not helpful for real family life, we generally do not stock it — even if it is popular or well marketed.
We Look Closely at the Brand Behind the Product
A product is only as trustworthy as the company behind it. Before choosing a brand, we look at its values, reputation, transparency and manufacturing standards.
We consider questions like:
- Where is the product made?
- Does the brand clearly explain its ingredients or materials?
- Does the company use responsible manufacturing practices?
- Is the brand transparent about certifications and testing?
- Does the product match what families are actually looking for?
Where possible, we love supporting Australian and New Zealand brands, as well as international brands that meet strong quality, safety and environmental standards. You can read more about our broader approach on our Sustainability page.
We Check Ingredients, Materials and Safety Details
Ingredient checking is one of the most important parts of our product selection process, especially for baby care, skincare, nappies, wipes, oral care and anything used close to a child’s skin.
We avoid products that contain ingredients or materials we are not comfortable recommending, including questionable preservatives, harsh surfactants, synthetic fragrances, PVC, BPA, phthalates and other ingredients we believe families should be able to avoid more easily.
You can read more about this in our Ingredients Policy, Toxins Policy and Toxic Ingredients We Avoid guide.
We Look for Independent Certifications Where They Matter
Words like “natural”, “eco”, “organic” and “non-toxic” are often used very loosely. That is why we look for independent certifications and third-party standards whenever they are relevant.
Depending on the product category, this may include organic certifications, cruelty-free standards, fair trade certifications, environmental labels, safety testing, quality certifications or recognised allergy and skin-sensitivity standards.
Certifications are not the only thing we consider, but they can help verify that a brand’s claims are more than just marketing.
We Choose Products That Work in Real Life
Safer ingredients matter, but the product still needs to do its job. A nappy needs to absorb well. A baby wipe needs to be practical. A lunchbox needs to last. A toy needs to be safe, engaging and age appropriate.
Where possible, our team tests products at home and considers real customer feedback. If a product does not perform well, is difficult to use, or does not offer good value, it will not stay in our range simply because it looks good on paper.
We Think About Babies, Kids and Sensitive Families First
Many Hello Charlie customers are parents shopping for newborns, toddlers, children with sensitive skin, or families trying to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure at home.
That is why we take a cautious approach. We may choose not to stock a product, flavour, scent or formula if we believe it is not suitable for babies, children, pregnancy or sensitive families — even if other products from the same brand are excellent.
Our goal is not to offer the biggest range. Our goal is to offer a thoughtfully edited range that makes choosing easier.
We Consider Packaging and Environmental Impact
We know sustainability is not just about the product inside the box. Packaging, shipping, materials, durability and waste all matter too.
Where possible, we prefer products with reusable, recyclable, compostable or reduced packaging. We also consider whether a product helps families reduce waste over time, such as reusable bottles, lunchboxes, cloth wipes, plastic-free home products and long-lasting toys.
You can learn more about our packaging approach on our Sustainable Packaging page and our broader environmental efforts on our Carbon Offset Policy page.
We Listen to Our Customers
Some of our best product discoveries come from customers. When families tell us they love a product, need a better alternative, or cannot find something that meets their values, we listen.
Customer feedback helps us improve our range, remove products that no longer meet expectations, and research new options that better support real family needs.
We Keep Reviewing Our Range
Choosing safer, natural and eco products is not a one-time decision. Ingredients change, suppliers update formulas, new research becomes available, and better alternatives enter the market.
We regularly review our products and update our information where needed. If a product no longer meets our standards, we are happy to reconsider whether it still belongs at Hello Charlie.
Our Promise to You
When you shop with Hello Charlie, you are not just browsing a random collection of “eco” products. You are choosing from a range that has been carefully researched, edited and selected with families in mind.
We do the checking so you can shop with more confidence — whether you are choosing eco disposable nappies, baby wipes, natural rubber dummies, baby toys, plastic-free living essentials or everyday family products.
