What Is a TOG Rating on Baby Sleep Bags?

, by Hello Charlie Blogs, 2 min reading time

TOG is a measure of thermal insulation: the higher the number, the warmer the sleep bag. It is useful, but it is not a universal instruction to dress every baby the same way at a particular temperature.

Quick answer: choose a well-fitted, hoodless, unweighted sleep bag with a lower TOG in warmer conditions and a higher TOG in cooler conditions. Follow that product’s layering guide and check baby’s chest or back—warm is comfortable; hot, sweaty or clammy means remove a layer.

What does TOG mean?

TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade. A light summer bag may be around 0.2–0.5 TOG, while warmer products may range to 2.5 or 3.5 TOG. Construction, sleeves, clothing underneath, airflow and the baby all affect real warmth.

Australia does not have a single mandatory TOG safety standard for infant sleep bags. Compare the manufacturer’s instructions and do not assume two brands with the same number fit or perform identically.

Room temperature is only one clue

Red Nose Australia does not prescribe one ideal room temperature. Dress baby for the actual environment and check their chest or back rather than hands and feet, which often feel cooler. Fever, prematurity and health conditions can change needs; ask a health professional when uncertain.

Fit matters as much as warmth

A safer sleep bag should:

  • fit the baby’s current size, weight and length;
  • have a fitted neck and armholes so the head cannot slip inside;
  • be hoodless and keep the head and face uncovered;
  • allow unrestricted arm movement;
  • have secure fastenings without loose choking hazards; and
  • be in good condition with leg room for natural hip movement.

Never use weighted sleep products

Red Nose advises never using weighted sleeping bags or blankets for babies. Weight can restrict chest movement and contribute to overheating. Marketing claims about calm or longer sleep do not establish infant safety.

Do not wrap inside a sleep bag

A sleep bag already insulates the body. Do not swaddle or wrap a baby inside one unless the product is specifically designed and used according to safe guidance. Stop wrapping as soon as a baby shows signs of rolling. Keep the cot clear of pillows, doonas, soft toys, bumpers and loose bedding.

How to choose layers

  1. Check the room where baby will actually sleep.
  2. Use the sleep-bag brand’s TOG and clothing guide.
  3. Choose light, fitted layers underneath.
  4. Do not add a blanket over the sleep bag.
  5. Recheck baby after settling and when conditions change.

Second-hand sleep bags

Second-hand can be economical and lower waste. Check the size and TOG label, neck and arm openings, seams, press studs and zip. Avoid damaged, altered, recalled or smoke-contaminated products. Wash according to the label before use.
