Choosing a toothpaste should not require a chemistry degree. This updated guide keeps every one of the 44 toothpastes reviewed in our May 2024 PDF, adds six newer or newly relevant formulas, checks important current products against live manufacturer information, and applies one consistent recommendation framework across all 50 products.
Updated: 11 July 2026 ·Formula information can change, so always check the product pack before purchase.
There is no single best toothpaste for every mouth. Fluoride preference, cavity risk, sensitivity, flavour tolerance and ingredient priorities all matter. These are our strongest editorial picks from the formulas reviewed.
What stayed: all 44 products from the May 2024 Hello Charlie PDF remain in this guide. We did not delete products simply because availability changed.
What changed: we replaced the old traffic-light system with our current three-tier star system, added six newer products, verified current formulas where reliable official information was available, and rewrote ingredient commentary to be more balanced and evidence-aware.
Important distinction: a historical 2024 ingredient list is not automatically treated as a current 2026 formula. Where we could not independently verify a fresh manufacturer list, the review says so clearly.
Our ratings consider the complete formula, ingredient transparency, presence of artificial colours or sweeteners, surfactants and preservatives, sensitivity considerations, useful actives such as fluoride or hydroxyapatite, and the context of how toothpaste is actually used. We do not treat every synthetic ingredient as harmful, every natural ingredient as automatically gentle, or every fluoride-free formula as automatically superior.
The original Green / Orange / Red Light ratings are preserved only as historical information from the 2024 PDF. They are not the current recommendation system.
Fluoride remains the most established anti-caries active in mainstream Australian dental guidance. The Australian Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, and supports fluoride as an effective way to reduce tooth decay. That does not mean every person must make the same toothpaste choice, but it does mean fluoride-free products should not automatically be described as healthier or more effective for everyone.
Hydroxyapatite has become much more prominent since our 2024 guide. It is a mineral closely related to the structure of tooth enamel, and a growing body of research supports its use in oral-care products for remineralisation and sensitivity support. However, concentrations, particle sizes and finished formulas vary, so we do not assume that every toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite performs identically.
Most toothpastes combine abrasives, humectants, binders, surfactants, flavours, preservatives and one or more oral-health actives. We assess the finished formula rather than judging a product on a single scary-sounding ingredient name.
The Australian regulatory position is also more nuanced than simply calling all toothpaste a cosmetic. Classification depends on presentation, ingredients and claims; some oral-hygiene products are excluded from therapeutic-goods regulation, while products making therapeutic claims or containing relevant actives may fall under TGA requirements.
This table combines six 2026 additions with all 44 products preserved from the original 2024 Cheat Sheet.

These products were not part of the original 44-product 2024 PDF. We added them because they represent current Australian-market availability, newer hydroxyapatite formulations, or a meaningful choice for Hello Charlie readers.
New to this Cheat Sheet. It adds non-nano hydroxyapatite to a straightforward fluoride-free Australian-made formula.
Adults looking for an accessible Australian-made, fluoride-free hydroxyapatite toothpaste.
A concise formula with non-nano hydroxyapatite, xylitol and baking soda, without SLS or artificial sweeteners. Grants is also transparent about the full ingredient list.
It is fluoride-free, so people at higher cavity risk should discuss whether a fluoride toothpaste is more appropriate for their needs. Baking soda and strong mint flavours may not suit every sensitive mouth.
One of the strongest new Australian additions to this update and a clear ★★★★★ choice within Hello Charlie’s ingredient and transparency framework.
Aqua (Water), Calcium Carbonate, Glycerin (Vegetable), Hydroxyapatite, Sodium Bicarbonate, Xylitol, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cellulose Gum, Silica, Menthol, Carvone, Stevioside, Anethole, D-Limonene, Coconut Oil, Peppermint Oil and Spearmint Oil.
New to this Cheat Sheet. Built on MooGoo’s current Moothpaste base with added arginine and nano-hydroxyapatite for a sensitivity-focused option.
Adults with sensitive teeth who specifically want a fluoride-free formula with hydroxyapatite and arginine.
Excellent transparency and a thoughtful combination of nano-hydroxyapatite, arginine, xylitol and theobromine. The formula is free from SLS, saccharin and titanium dioxide.
This formula uses nano-hydroxyapatite, while some shoppers specifically prefer non-nano minerals. Sensitive teeth can have several causes, so persistent pain should be assessed by a dentist.
A very strong, modern fluoride-free sensitive-toothpaste formula and a ★★★★★ addition to the 2026 guide.
Sorbitol, Calcium Carbonate, Tapioca Starch, Aqua, Arginine, Sodium Bicarbonate, Nano Hydroxyapatite, Xylitol, Coco Glucoside, Natural Flavour – Peppermint, Xanthan Gum, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf Extract, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Theobromine.
New to this Cheat Sheet. Australian-made fluoride-free toothpaste using pharmaceutical-grade micro-hydroxyapatite and botanical flavouring.
Shoppers seeking an Australian-made, fluoride-free micro-hydroxyapatite toothpaste with a botanical flavour profile.
A modern mineral-based approach, Australian manufacture and useful ingredient education. Micro-hydroxyapatite will appeal to shoppers who prefer a non-nano option.
For a top transparency score, we would prefer an easy-to-find complete ingredient list in standard INCI-style order on the product page. Botanical oils can also irritate very sensitive mouths.
A promising Australian option with good ingredients, held at ★★★★☆ mainly because full formula transparency could be clearer.
Key ingredients disclosed by the brand include pharmaceutical-grade micro-hydroxyapatite, glycerin, spearmint oil, lemon peel oil, chicory-root prebiotic fibre and Acacia senegal gum.
New to this Cheat Sheet. A natural fluoride option with 1400 ppm sodium fluoride and NaTrue certification.
Adults who want a natural-positioned toothpaste while retaining fluoride for cavity prevention.
A clearly declared 1400 ppm fluoride level, xylitol, certified natural positioning and a complete ingredient list. It is one of the few natural fluoride toothpastes currently stocked by Hello Charlie.
It contains sodium coco-sulfate, titanium dioxide, aroma and multiple aromatic botanicals, so it is not the simplest option for people with very reactive mouths.
A useful fluoride-containing natural toothpaste and a solid ★★★★☆ choice, especially for shoppers who do not want to give up fluoride.
Sorbitol, Aqua, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Xylitol, Aloe Vera Juice, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Melissa Extract, Eucalyptus Oil, Peppermint Extract, Sage Extract, Miswak Extract, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sea Salt, Aroma and Limonene.
New to this Cheat Sheet. A widely recognised nano-hydroxyapatite formula with xylitol and multiple botanical flavour oils.
Adults curious about a well-known imported nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and comfortable with a strong mint-and-botanical flavour profile.
Clear full ingredient disclosure, hydroxyapatite and xylitol, and no fluoride or artificial dyes.
Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate sits outside Hello Charlie’s preferred framework, and the long essential-oil profile may be too intense for highly sensitive mouths.
A good modern hydroxyapatite option with useful transparency, rated ★★★★☆ because of the cleanser and strong essential-oil blend.
Water, Glycerin, Hydrated Silica, Sorbitol, Silica, Hydroxyapatite, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Peppermint Oil, Spearmint Oil, Anise Oil, Wintergreen Oil, Xylitol, Xanthan Gum, Stevia, Dimethyl Sulfone, Aloe, Sodium Bicarbonate, Green Tea Extract, Cucumber Extract, Avocado Extract, Mango Extract, Menthol, Cardamom Oil, Potassium Chloride and Limonene.
New to this Cheat Sheet. Fluoride-free nano-hydroxyapatite formula in a recyclable metal tube.
Adults wanting a plastic-reducing metal-tube toothpaste with nano-hydroxyapatite and no fluoride or SLS.
Excellent full ingredient transparency, nano-hydroxyapatite, xylitol, SLS-free formulation and recyclable metal packaging.
Carrageenan is a formulation choice some Hello Charlie readers prefer to avoid, and the multiple aromatic oils may not suit highly sensitive mouths.
A thoughtful and transparent fluoride-free hydroxyapatite formula with a few considerations, earning ★★★★☆.
Calcium Carbonate, Vegetable Glycerin, Purified Water, Sodium Bicarbonate, Xylitol, Hydrated Silica, Nano Hydroxyapatite, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Carrageenan, Coconut Oil, Peppermint Oil, Spearmint Oil, Anise Seed Extract, Wintergreen Oil, Potassium Chloride and Stevia.

No. “Natural” is not a guarantee of effectiveness, gentleness or transparency. Some plant-derived essential oils can irritate sensitive mouths, while some conventional ingredients have strong evidence for oral-health benefits.
Not automatically. Fluoride remains the mainstream Australian dental recommendation for cavity prevention. People choosing fluoride-free toothpaste should consider their personal decay risk and seek professional advice when needed.
No. They work differently. Hydroxyapatite is a tooth-like calcium-phosphate mineral used to support remineralisation and sensitivity, while fluoride helps strengthen enamel and make it more resistant to acid attack. Research on hydroxyapatite is promising, but products vary substantially.
SLS is an effective surfactant and is not automatically unsafe when used as directed. However, some people with sensitive mouths or recurrent aphthous ulcers prefer SLS-free toothpaste because it can be irritating for them.
Charcoal can help remove some surface staining, but the key question is the abrasivity of the finished toothpaste. Without RDA data, it is difficult to judge long-term enamel wear from the ingredient list alone.
