The Best Natural Toothpaste: A Cheat Sheet - Hello Charlie

Best Natural Toothpaste Australia 2026: 50 Products Reviewed

, by Hello Charlie Blogs, 92 min reading time

Choosing a toothpaste should not require a chemistry degree. This updated guide keeps every one of the 44 toothpastes reviewed in our May 2024 PDF, adds six newer or newly relevant formulas, checks important current products against live manufacturer information, and applies one consistent recommendation framework across all 50 products.

Updated: 11 July 2026 ·Formula information can change, so always check the product pack before purchase.

Quick Verdict: Our Standout Natural Toothpaste Picks

There is no single best toothpaste for every mouth. Fluoride preference, cavity risk, sensitivity, flavour tolerance and ingredient priorities all matter. These are our strongest editorial picks from the formulas reviewed.

Best current fluoride-free all-rounder
MooGoo Peppermint Moothpaste — hydroxyapatite, xylitol and theobromine in a transparent current formula.
Best new Australian formula
Grants Whitening +HA — non-nano hydroxyapatite, xylitol and a concise full ingredient list.
Best fluoride option currently stocked by Hello Charlie
Lavera Complete Care Mint — 1400 ppm sodium fluoride in a natural-positioned formula.
Best fluoride-free sensitive-teeth newcomer
MooGoo Sensitive Moothpaste — nano-hydroxyapatite, arginine, xylitol and theobromine.
Best classic 2024 favourite
Weleda Salt Toothpaste — still one of the standout minimalist traditional formulas in the original guide.
Best non-mint-style direction
Look to options such as Miessence Lemon, Alfree Pear or other flavour-free products, but always verify the latest formula.

How We Updated This Cheat Sheet

What stayed: all 44 products from the May 2024 Hello Charlie PDF remain in this guide. We did not delete products simply because availability changed.

What changed: we replaced the old traffic-light system with our current three-tier star system, added six newer products, verified current formulas where reliable official information was available, and rewrote ingredient commentary to be more balanced and evidence-aware.

Important distinction: a historical 2024 ingredient list is not automatically treated as a current 2026 formula. Where we could not independently verify a fresh manufacturer list, the review says so clearly.

Our ratings consider the complete formula, ingredient transparency, presence of artificial colours or sweeteners, surfactants and preservatives, sensitivity considerations, useful actives such as fluoride or hydroxyapatite, and the context of how toothpaste is actually used. We do not treat every synthetic ingredient as harmful, every natural ingredient as automatically gentle, or every fluoride-free formula as automatically superior.

Our 2026 Recommendation Rating System

★★★★★Strong Recommendation

Strongly aligns with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient and transparency criteria.

★★★★☆Good Recommendation With Considerations

A good overall option, with one or more ingredients, formulation choices or transparency points worth considering.

★★★☆☆Suitable for Some Families

May still suit some families, but it aligns less closely with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient framework.

The original Green / Orange / Red Light ratings are preserved only as historical information from the 2024 PDF. They are not the current recommendation system.

Fluoride, Hydroxyapatite and the Bigger Oral-Health Picture

Fluoride remains the most established anti-caries active in mainstream Australian dental guidance. The Australian Dental Association recommends brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, and supports fluoride as an effective way to reduce tooth decay. That does not mean every person must make the same toothpaste choice, but it does mean fluoride-free products should not automatically be described as healthier or more effective for everyone.

Hydroxyapatite has become much more prominent since our 2024 guide. It is a mineral closely related to the structure of tooth enamel, and a growing body of research supports its use in oral-care products for remineralisation and sensitivity support. However, concentrations, particle sizes and finished formulas vary, so we do not assume that every toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite performs identically.

Our practical view: low cavity risk, sensitivity, age, diet, saliva flow, medication use, orthodontic appliances and dental history can all affect the best toothpaste choice. For people with frequent cavities, significant enamel erosion, persistent sensitivity or gum disease, personalised dental advice matters more than any generic product ranking.

Toothpaste Ingredients: What We Look At

Most toothpastes combine abrasives, humectants, binders, surfactants, flavours, preservatives and one or more oral-health actives. We assess the finished formula rather than judging a product on a single scary-sounding ingredient name.

  • Fluoride: evidence-based cavity prevention; some shoppers prefer fluoride-free products, but that preference should be separated from claims about proven effectiveness.
  • Hydroxyapatite: a promising enamel-support mineral used in both nano and non-nano forms. We look for clear disclosure of type and complete formula transparency.
  • Xylitol: commonly used as a sweetener in oral care and may help reduce the activity of cavity-associated bacteria.
  • SLS and other strong surfactants: effective cleansers, but some people with sensitive mouths or recurrent ulcers prefer SLS-free toothpaste.
  • Essential oils and intense flavours: natural does not always mean gentle. Peppermint, cinnamon, clove, wintergreen and other oils can be irritating for some users.
  • Charcoal and whitening abrasives: ingredient names alone do not reveal abrasivity. RDA data for the finished toothpaste is more useful when available.
  • Artificial colours, artificial sweeteners and vague flavour disclosure: these are mainly transparency and preference considerations in our framework unless there is a specific sensitivity or regulatory concern.

The Australian regulatory position is also more nuanced than simply calling all toothpaste a cosmetic. Classification depends on presentation, ingredients and claims; some oral-hygiene products are excluded from therapeutic-goods regulation, while products making therapeutic claims or containing relevant actives may fall under TGA requirements.

Formula Change Summary

New to this Cheat Sheet. It adds non-nano hydroxyapatite to a straightforward fluoride-free Australian-made formula.

Best For

Adults looking for an accessible Australian-made, fluoride-free hydroxyapatite toothpaste.

What We Like

A concise formula with non-nano hydroxyapatite, xylitol and baking soda, without SLS or artificial sweeteners. Grants is also transparent about the full ingredient list.

What To Consider

It is fluoride-free, so people at higher cavity risk should discuss whether a fluoride toothpaste is more appropriate for their needs. Baking soda and strong mint flavours may not suit every sensitive mouth.

Hello Charlie Verdict

One of the strongest new Australian additions to this update and a clear ★★★★★ choice within Hello Charlie’s ingredient and transparency framework.

Formula Change Summary

New to this Cheat Sheet. Built on MooGoo’s current Moothpaste base with added arginine and nano-hydroxyapatite for a sensitivity-focused option.

Best For

Adults with sensitive teeth who specifically want a fluoride-free formula with hydroxyapatite and arginine.

What We Like

Excellent transparency and a thoughtful combination of nano-hydroxyapatite, arginine, xylitol and theobromine. The formula is free from SLS, saccharin and titanium dioxide.

What To Consider

This formula uses nano-hydroxyapatite, while some shoppers specifically prefer non-nano minerals. Sensitive teeth can have several causes, so persistent pain should be assessed by a dentist.

Hello Charlie Verdict

A very strong, modern fluoride-free sensitive-toothpaste formula and a ★★★★★ addition to the 2026 guide.

Current ingredients or key ingredients

Sorbitol, Calcium Carbonate, Tapioca Starch, Aqua, Arginine, Sodium Bicarbonate, Nano Hydroxyapatite, Xylitol, Coco Glucoside, Natural Flavour – Peppermint, Xanthan Gum, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf Extract, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Theobromine.

Formula Change Summary

New to this Cheat Sheet. Australian-made fluoride-free toothpaste using pharmaceutical-grade micro-hydroxyapatite and botanical flavouring.

Best For

Shoppers seeking an Australian-made, fluoride-free micro-hydroxyapatite toothpaste with a botanical flavour profile.

What We Like

A modern mineral-based approach, Australian manufacture and useful ingredient education. Micro-hydroxyapatite will appeal to shoppers who prefer a non-nano option.

What To Consider

For a top transparency score, we would prefer an easy-to-find complete ingredient list in standard INCI-style order on the product page. Botanical oils can also irritate very sensitive mouths.

Hello Charlie Verdict

A promising Australian option with good ingredients, held at ★★★★☆ mainly because full formula transparency could be clearer.

Current ingredients or key ingredients

Key ingredients disclosed by the brand include pharmaceutical-grade micro-hydroxyapatite, glycerin, spearmint oil, lemon peel oil, chicory-root prebiotic fibre and Acacia senegal gum.

Current Recommendation Rating★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations

Formula Change Summary

New to this Cheat Sheet. A natural fluoride option with 1400 ppm sodium fluoride and NaTrue certification.

Best For

Adults who want a natural-positioned toothpaste while retaining fluoride for cavity prevention.

What We Like

A clearly declared 1400 ppm fluoride level, xylitol, certified natural positioning and a complete ingredient list. It is one of the few natural fluoride toothpastes currently stocked by Hello Charlie.

What To Consider

It contains sodium coco-sulfate, titanium dioxide, aroma and multiple aromatic botanicals, so it is not the simplest option for people with very reactive mouths.

Hello Charlie Verdict

A useful fluoride-containing natural toothpaste and a solid ★★★★☆ choice, especially for shoppers who do not want to give up fluoride.

Current ingredients or key ingredients

Sorbitol, Aqua, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Xylitol, Aloe Vera Juice, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Melissa Extract, Eucalyptus Oil, Peppermint Extract, Sage Extract, Miswak Extract, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sea Salt, Aroma and Limonene.

Formula Change Summary

New to this Cheat Sheet. A widely recognised nano-hydroxyapatite formula with xylitol and multiple botanical flavour oils.

Best For

Adults curious about a well-known imported nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and comfortable with a strong mint-and-botanical flavour profile.

What We Like

Clear full ingredient disclosure, hydroxyapatite and xylitol, and no fluoride or artificial dyes.

What To Consider

Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate sits outside Hello Charlie’s preferred framework, and the long essential-oil profile may be too intense for highly sensitive mouths.

Hello Charlie Verdict

A good modern hydroxyapatite option with useful transparency, rated ★★★★☆ because of the cleanser and strong essential-oil blend.

Current Recommendation Rating★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations

Formula Change Summary

No verified 2026 formula comparison completed. Always check the pack or current manufacturer page because toothpaste formulas can change.

Best For

Adults who dislike standard mint toothpaste and want an alternative flavour profile.

What We Like

The overall formula is still a good option, with useful ingredients and only a limited number of points to consider. Notable formula features include xylitol, aloe, calcium carbonate.

What To Consider

Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate is not an automatic safety problem for everyone, but it falls outside Hello Charlie’s preferred minimalist framework. Flavour or aroma disclosure is not fully specific, which reduces ingredient transparency for people managing sensitivities.

Hello Charlie Verdict

★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations. A good overall option with one or more formulation, sensitivity or transparency points worth weighing against your own priorities.

Current ingredients or key ingredients

2024 reference formula (not re-verified as current): Calcium Carbonate, Glycerin, Water, Xylitol, Hydrated Silica, Cellulose Gum, Decyl, Glucoside, Potassium, Sorbate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Mentha Piperita Oil, Menthol, Backhousia Citriodora Leaf Oil, Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Limonene^, Linalool^. Formula Change Summary

No verified 2026 formula comparison completed. Always check the pack or current manufacturer page because toothpaste formulas can change.

Best For

Adults prioritising surface-stain removal and a charcoal-style brushing experience.

What We Like

The overall formula is still a good option, with useful ingredients and only a limited number of points to consider. Notable formula features include xylitol.

What To Consider

Flavour or aroma disclosure is not fully specific, which reduces ingredient transparency for people managing sensitivities. Charcoal does not automatically tell you how abrasive the finished toothpaste is; published RDA data would be more useful for judging long-term enamel wear.

Current Recommendation Rating★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families

Formula Change Summary

No verified 2026 formula comparison completed. Always check the pack or current manufacturer page because toothpaste formulas can change.

Best For

Adults comparing fluoride-free or more naturally positioned everyday toothpastes.

What We Like

The product may still suit some families, but it aligns less closely with Hello Charlie’s preferred ingredient framework. Notable formula features include calcium carbonate.

What To Consider

Carrageenan is a formulation choice some shoppers prefer to avoid; its presence alone does not mean the toothpaste is unsafe when used as directed. The strong botanical or essential-oil profile may be too intense for very sensitive mouths.

Hello Charlie Verdict

★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families. It may work well for some people, but there are enough ingredient or transparency considerations that it is not among our strongest recommendations.

Major Formula and Verification Notes

  • MooGoo Moothpaste: the current official formula now includes theobromine alongside hydroxyapatite and xylitol.
  • Grants Fresh Mint: the current official formula uses sodium methyl cocoyl taurate rather than the sodium lauroyl sarcosinate shown in the 2024 PDF — a positive change within Hello Charlie’s preferred framework.
  • Miessence Lemon and Redmond EarthPaste: the 2024 PDF appears to repeat the MooGoo ingredient list for these products. We have preserved the historical review but deliberately do not present that duplicated list as a verified current formula.
  • New hydroxyapatite category growth: Grants +HA, MooGoo Sensitive, Peg Paste, Boka and Davids reflect how much more visible hydroxyapatite toothpaste has become since the original 2024 guide.
  • Formula drift: toothpaste ingredients change regularly. A product can remain under the same name while changing surfactants, flavour systems, sweeteners or active ingredients.

Natural Toothpaste FAQs

Is natural toothpaste automatically better?

No. “Natural” is not a guarantee of effectiveness, gentleness or transparency. Some plant-derived essential oils can irritate sensitive mouths, while some conventional ingredients have strong evidence for oral-health benefits.

Should I avoid fluoride?

Not automatically. Fluoride remains the mainstream Australian dental recommendation for cavity prevention. People choosing fluoride-free toothpaste should consider their personal decay risk and seek professional advice when needed.

Is hydroxyapatite the same as fluoride?

No. They work differently. Hydroxyapatite is a tooth-like calcium-phosphate mineral used to support remineralisation and sensitivity, while fluoride helps strengthen enamel and make it more resistant to acid attack. Research on hydroxyapatite is promising, but products vary substantially.

Is SLS dangerous?

SLS is an effective surfactant and is not automatically unsafe when used as directed. However, some people with sensitive mouths or recurrent aphthous ulcers prefer SLS-free toothpaste because it can be irritating for them.

What about charcoal toothpaste?

Charcoal can help remove some surface staining, but the key question is the abrasivity of the finished toothpaste. Without RDA data, it is difficult to judge long-term enamel wear from the ingredient list alone.
