Last comprehensively reviewed: 10 July 2026
Products covered: More than 90 current and historical deodorants
Natural deodorant has changed enormously since we first published this Cheat Sheet in 2018.
Back then, we reviewed 86 deodorants from 67 different brands. Natural deodorant pastes were still relatively unusual, magnesium-based formulas were far less common, refillable sticks had barely entered the mainstream, and genuinely fragrance-free options could be surprisingly difficult to find.
Today, Australian shoppers have far more choice. There are deodorant creams, roll-ons, sprays, balms, cardboard sticks, refillable systems, bicarb-free formulas and products specifically designed for sensitive skin.
More choice is a good thing. But it also makes choosing harder.
So we've gone back through our original Natural Deodorant Cheat Sheet, preserved every product previously reviewed, checked major current formulas where reliable ingredient information is available, added significant newer products, and updated our recommendation system.
As always, our aim is not to tell you that one ingredient is automatically “good” or “bad”. It is to help you understand what is actually in a product, how transparent the formula is, and what might matter for your own skin, preferences and values.

Our ratings are based primarily on formulation transparency and alignment with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient framework. They are not medical diagnoses, toxicology scores or guarantees that a product will work for every person.
Strongly aligns with our preferred ingredient and transparency criteria. Typical factors may include a clearly disclosed formula, fragrance-free or fully transparent scent choices, simple formulations, meaningful certifications, sensitive-skin options and fewer ingredients outside our preferred framework.
A 5-star rating does not mean zero possibility of irritation. Even natural ingredients can cause reactions.
A good formula overall, but with one or more considerations. These may include essential oils, alcohol, sodium bicarbonate, natural fragrance allergens or a more complex formulation.
These products may contain aluminium salts, undisclosed parfum, certain preservatives, PEGs, synthetic fragrance, propellants or other ingredients that make them less aligned with what we generally prefer.
A 3-star rating does not automatically mean a product is unsafe. It means that, based on our own criteria, we believe there are more transparent or better-aligned alternatives available.
Our original 2018 article reflected concerns that were widely repeated at the time about aluminium in antiperspirants and possible links with breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
We would not repeat those claims as established fact today.
The Cancer Council Australia states that there is no evidence supporting the claim that deodorants or antiperspirants cause cancer. The US National Cancer Institute similarly states that no scientific evidence links the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants with the development of breast cancer.
That doesn't mean everyone has to choose an aluminium-containing antiperspirant.
We still think consumers should be able to choose an aluminium-free deodorant because they prefer to perspire naturally, want simpler formulations, have experienced irritation, want to reduce product residue on clothing, or simply prefer a different approach to body care.
But we believe that choice should be based on accurate information rather than fear.
Deodorants primarily target body odour. They may work through ingredients such as magnesium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, zinc compounds, triethyl citrate, alcohol, starches, clays, essential oils or other antimicrobial and odour-neutralising ingredients.
Antiperspirants reduce perspiration, usually using aluminium salts.
A natural deodorant generally will not stop you from sweating. That is not necessarily a product failure. Its main job is usually to help manage odour rather than block perspiration.
There is no universal perfect formula. Some people can happily use bicarb every day. Others develop redness within hours. Some love strongly scented essential-oil blends. Others need a completely fragrance-free product.
When assessing deodorants, we look at several factors:
Bicarb is one of the most effective and widely used natural deodorant ingredients. It can help neutralise odour, but its alkaline nature may irritate some people's underarms, particularly with frequent use or after shaving.
We don't automatically mark a product down simply because it contains bicarb. But for very sensitive or reactive skin, a magnesium-based or bicarb-free formula may be a better place to start.
Magnesium hydroxide has become an increasingly popular alternative to bicarb in natural deodorants. It is particularly common in formulas marketed towards sensitive skin.
You'll now find magnesium-based options from brands including MooGoo, No Pong, Woohoo, Noosa Basics and Viva La Body.
Essential oils can add fragrance and may contribute antimicrobial properties. But “natural” does not mean non-irritating. Essential oils and their naturally occurring fragrance constituents can trigger reactions in sensitive individuals.
We therefore generally rate a truly fragrance-free, well-formulated sensitive-skin option more highly than a heavily scented formula.
For us, this is primarily a transparency question.
A brand may use a perfectly acceptable natural fragrance blend, but simply listing “parfum” gives consumers less information than a complete disclosure.
Where a brand clearly explains that its fragrance is derived from natural essential oils and provides relevant allergen information, we take that additional transparency into account.
Crystal deodorants often use potassium alum or ammonium alum. These are aluminium-containing mineral salts, although they are chemically different from the aluminium compounds typically used as antiperspirant actives.
For consumers specifically looking for an aluminium-free deodorant, potassium alum products do not meet that preference. For that reason, crystal deodorants generally receive a lower recommendation under our framework.
That rating should not be interpreted as evidence that crystal deodorants cause cancer. That is not what current evidence establishes.
Methylisothiazolinone, often abbreviated as MI or MIT, is a preservative with a significant history of contact-allergy concerns. For a leave-on product such as deodorant, its presence weighs heavily against a stronger recommendation from us.

Original Recommendation Rating: The exact product was not included in the 2018 article, although earlier Lavera deodorants received positive reviews.
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆ Good Recommendation With Considerations.
Formula Change Summary: This cream format is different from the Lavera Basis Roll-On and Lime Verbena Spray included in the original article.
Current Ingredients: Soybean oil, sodium bicarbonate, zinc oxide, hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn starch, shea butter, glyceryl oleate, coconut oil, fragrance from natural essential oils, silica, ginseng extract, peppermint extract, green tea extract, kaolin and supporting ingredients.
Best For: People wanting an aluminium-free, alcohol-free certified natural deodorant cream.
What We Like: The complete formula is disclosed. It combines bicarb, zinc oxide, starch, silica and kaolin for odour and moisture management. It is NaTrue certified and free from synthetic fragrance, parabens and microplastics.
What To Consider: It contains sodium bicarbonate and multiple naturally occurring fragrance allergens, so it may not be our first choice for very sensitive or highly fragrance-reactive skin.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A solid natural deodorant formula and currently the only deodorant showing in Hello Charlie's dedicated Natural Deodorants collection when this update was completed. We particularly like the transparency and certification, while recognising that bicarb-free and fragrance-free options may be better for very sensitive users.
Current Product Status: Current product.

What To Consider: Sodium bicarbonate can irritate some people, particularly after shaving or with repeated use. The essential-oil blend may also be unsuitable for highly reactive skin.

Current Product Status: Current product.

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Verified against current official ingredient disclosure.

Best For: People prioritising strong performance, premium texture and perfume-style scent.
What We Like: Multiple odour- and moisture-management ingredients and clear INCI lists for individual scents.
What To Consider: Sodium bicarbonate and parfum make it less suitable for very sensitive or fragrance-avoidant shoppers. Its fragrance-led positioning is also less aligned with our preference for simpler, more transparent sensitive-skin formulas.
Hello Charlie Verdict: An interesting high-performance balm, but not one of our first choices for the most sensitive skin or for people specifically trying to minimise fragrance exposure.
In 2018, many natural deodorants relied heavily on baking soda and essential oils. Today, shoppers can choose from dedicated fragrance-free, bicarb-free and magnesium-based formulas from brands including MooGoo, Woohoo, No Pong, Black Chicken, Noosa Basics and Viva La Body.
Woohoo now reports the use of additional ingredients including ultra-fine magnesium, zinc ricinoleate and bamboo powder in upgraded stick and paste formulations.
This is an important addition for people who want to avoid both baking soda and added fragrance while retaining the convenience of a roll-on.
Although its fragrance-free magnesium positioning remains attractive, its currently disclosed ingredient list includes phenoxyethanol and methylisothiazolinone. Based on our current criteria, we prefer several other magnesium formulas now available.
Brands such as Wild have helped turn reusable cases and replaceable deodorant refills into a mainstream personal-care format rather than a niche experiment.
We no longer present aluminium-containing antiperspirants as proven causes of breast cancer or Alzheimer's disease. Consumers may still prefer aluminium-free deodorants, but we believe that choice should be based on accurate evidence.
One of our priorities with this update was not to erase Hello Charlie's historical research.
Some products below have been discontinued. Some brands have changed ownership. Some formulas may have been reformulated. Some are still available internationally but are difficult to find in Australia. Others remain widely sold.
Where we have not been able to verify a current official formula, we do not pretend that a 2018 ingredient list is automatically still current. Those products remain below as part of the historical archive, with the original product name preserved.
Important: “Historical archive” does not mean recommended or not recommended. It means the product was included in Hello Charlie's original research and has been retained for completeness and transparency.
To keep this Cheat Sheet relevant rather than frozen in 2018, we have added significant newer formulas and formats that demonstrate how the category has evolved:
These additions reflect some of the biggest developments in natural deodorant over recent years: magnesium-based odour control, true fragrance-free choices, improved sensitive-skin options and refillable or plastic-free packaging.
For very sensitive skin, we'd start with a formula that removes as many common triggers as possible.
That usually means looking for:
Based on the formulas reviewed here, our strongest starting points are:
Black Chicken Barrier Booster and No Pong Bicarb-Free are also strong options, although individual scented versions may contain essential oils.
Even with a sensitive formula, patch testing is sensible. Stop using any product that causes persistent burning, redness, swelling or rash.
This is where expectations matter.
An aluminium-free deodorant is not usually an antiperspirant. You may still sweat.
If your main concern is odour rather than moisture, formulas using several complementary ingredients can be useful. Examples include combinations of:
Woohoo's updated formulas, Black Chicken Axilla Original, No Pong Original and Lavera Natural & Strong all use multiple approaches to odour or moisture management.
For excessive sweating that interferes with daily life, a natural deodorant Cheat Sheet is not a substitute for medical advice. Hyperhidrosis is a real condition and can be discussed with a GP or dermatologist.
You do not need to remove mysterious stored “toxins” from your armpits before a natural deodorant can work.
Some people do notice a period of adjustment when changing products. This may be because they are moving from an antiperspirant that reduced sweat to a deodorant that allows normal perspiration, or simply because a new formula interacts differently with their skin, bacteria, clothing and routine.
A gentle clay mask may feel pleasant for some people, but it should not be presented as medically necessary for detoxification.
More practical steps include:
Pregnancy can make skin more sensitive, and some people become less tolerant of fragrances or essential oils.
Rather than assuming that every product labelled “natural” is automatically ideal during pregnancy or breastfeeding, check the complete formula and the manufacturer's current usage guidance.
You can read our related guide here:
How to Use Deodorants Safely During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
The biggest lesson from reviewing more than 90 current and historical deodorants is that there is no single “best natural deodorant” for everybody.
The strongest deodorant for one person may irritate someone else's skin. A heavily scented product may be enjoyable for one person and completely unsuitable for another. A bicarb formula may provide excellent odour control for years, or cause a rash within days.
For that reason, our strongest overall preference is not simply for products that call themselves “natural”. We look for formulas that are transparent, purposeful and appropriate for the person using them.
For very sensitive skin, we particularly like truly fragrance-free and bicarb-free formulas such as MooGoo Sensitive & Fragrance-Free, Woohoo Mellow and Viva La Body Sensitive Neutral.
For stronger everyday natural deodorant performance, Black Chicken Axilla, No Pong, Woohoo Urban and Lavera Natural & Strong are all worth considering when your skin tolerates their respective ingredients.
And perhaps most importantly: choosing an aluminium-free deodorant is a perfectly reasonable personal preference, but consumers deserve accurate information. Current evidence does not establish that antiperspirants or deodorants cause breast cancer.
Good product education should make choosing easier, not scarier.
This article is provided for general educational and product-comparison purposes only. It is not medical advice and should not be used to diagnose, treat or prevent any medical condition. Cosmetic formulations can change without notice, and ingredient lists may vary by country, scent, size or production batch. Always check the current product packaging and manufacturer's information before purchase or use.
Individual skin tolerance varies. Even naturally derived ingredients, essential oils, sodium bicarbonate, alcohol and fragrance components can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Stop using a product if persistent irritation develops and seek professional medical advice when appropriate.
Our ratings reflect Hello Charlie's own ingredient preferences, transparency criteria and editorial framework. A lower rating does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe, and a higher rating does not guarantee that it will suit every person.
