Nappy Rash Cream Australia: 16 Products Compared

Last researched and updated: 10 July 2026
When parents search for the best nappy rash cream in Australia, the answer is not simply “natural versus synthetic”. The most useful product depends on what your baby actually needs: an everyday moisture barrier, a thicker zinc paste for irritated skin, a fragrance-free formula for sensitive skin, a zinc-free balm for routine protection, or medical assessment for a rash that may be fungal, infected or caused by something other than simple irritation.
Hello Charlie first published its Safer Nappy Rash Cream Cheat Sheet as a downloadable guide comparing 44 Australian nappy creams. The current public webpage, however, does not expose the original product-by-product list or historical ratings. Rather than guessing what an old rating may have been, this 2026 update starts again with current product information and clearly marks historical recommendations as not publicly verifiable wherever we cannot independently confirm them.
For this update, we researched 16 current and popular nappy creams, barrier creams, zinc pastes and useful international comparators. The products include natural formulas, pharmacy staples, fragrance-free creams, high-zinc pastes, petrolatum-based barriers and products that may not traditionally fit Hello Charlie's ingredient preferences but could still be useful for some families.
This is not a list of products we sell. In fact, many of the products reviewed here are not stocked by Hello Charlie. The purpose of this cheat sheet is to create a useful, transparent information hub where Australian families can compare formulas, understand ingredient trade-offs and make their own informed choices.
There is no single best nappy rash cream for every baby.
Among the products we researched, Mustela Vitamin Barrier Cream and Bunjie Nappy & Barrier Cream most closely align with Hello Charlie's current ingredient and transparency preferences, earning ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation ratings.
Four Cow Farm 100% Natural Nappy Cream, Little Innoscents Baby Barrier Cream, Weleda Calendula Nappy Change Cream and the imported Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm also stand out, but each has considerations such as essential oils, fragrance allergens, lanolin, botanicals or incomplete formula verification.
Popular pharmacy products including QV Baby Barrier Cream, Bepanthen Nappy Rash Ointment, Sudocrem, Nappy Goo and Dermal Therapy Little Bodies Nappy Balm receive three stars under our editorial framework. That does not mean they are unsafe or ineffective. In several cases, they contain well-established barrier ingredients such as zinc oxide, petrolatum, paraffin or dimethicone. Their lower rating simply reflects that their formulations align less closely with Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient preferences.
Our biggest takeaway: do not choose a nappy cream based on a “natural” label, zinc percentage or star rating alone. Consider the full formula, the type of rash, your baby's sensitivities, how the product will be used and whether the rash needs professional assessment rather than another over-the-counter cream.
For each product, we looked for current information from official Australian brand websites wherever possible. When a current Australian product page was unavailable, we used the official international brand source or clearly identified the product as an international comparator.
Each full review records:
Where a complete current ingredient list could not be independently captured, we say so. A product is not automatically rated poorly because a complete INCI list was unavailable, but formula transparency is one factor in our editorial recommendation.
The original public Hello Charlie article refers to a 44-product ebook, but the historical product list and individual ratings are not exposed on the current public webpage. Therefore, where an original recommendation cannot be independently confirmed, we write “Not publicly verifiable” rather than recreating or guessing old ratings.
Strongly aligns with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient and transparency criteria.
Typical characteristics may include a simpler formula, clear ingredient disclosure, no added fragrance, strong transparency, meaningful certification or fewer ingredients outside Hello Charlie's preferred framework.
A five-star rating does not mean a product will suit everyone. A highly rated cream may still contain botanicals, nut-derived oils, oats, beeswax or other ingredients that do not suit every baby.
A good overall option, with one or more ingredients, formulation choices or transparency points worth considering.
Considerations may include fragrance, essential oils, lanolin, incomplete ingredient disclosure, botanicals, certification questions or other formulation choices that families may wish to consider.
Four stars is still a positive recommendation.
May still suit some families, but it aligns less closely with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient framework.
These products may contain ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin, dimethicone, parabens, fragrance or other formulation choices outside our traditional preferences. That does not automatically make the product unsafe, unsuitable or ineffective.
About our recommendation ratings: Hello Charlie's star ratings are editorial recommendations based on our own ingredient preferences, product transparency, formulation choices and suitability for everyday family use. They are not medical advice, official safety classifications or regulatory assessments. A lower star rating does not mean a product is unsafe, and the best product for your family will always depend on individual needs, sensitivities and preferences.
Nappy rash is common, and simple irritant nappy rash is often associated with prolonged exposure to moisture, urine or faeces, along with friction and the warm, occlusive environment inside a nappy.
However, not every red rash under a nappy is the same. Candida, bacterial infection, eczema, psoriasis and other skin conditions can sometimes affect the nappy area and may require different management.
This is why a cream that works brilliantly for one baby may do very little for another. A barrier cream can help protect skin from moisture and irritants, but it cannot diagnose every rash or replace medical assessment when symptoms are persistent, severe or unusual.
Zinc oxide is one of the most common ingredients in nappy rash creams. It sits on the skin and helps form a protective barrier between the skin and moisture or irritants.
Some products use around 10–15% zinc oxide, while stronger pastes may contain 40%. A higher percentage is not automatically better for every situation. Very thick high-zinc pastes can be useful when a substantial barrier is wanted, while lighter formulas may be easier for everyday use and removal.
Petrolatum and related paraffin ingredients are effective occlusive barrier ingredients. They reduce water loss and create a protective layer over the skin.
Both Raising Children Network and DermNet identify petroleum jelly or petrolatum-containing ointments as established barrier options for nappy rash care. Hello Charlie has historically preferred plant oils, waxes and other alternatives where practical, so petrolatum-based products may receive a lower editorial star rating. That rating should not be interpreted as an official safety judgement.
Dimethicone is a silicone-based skin protectant used in some barrier creams. It can help reduce moisture loss and protect the skin surface.
Again, its presence may make a formula less aligned with Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient philosophy, but that is different from saying that the ingredient has no useful function.
Lanolin is a wax derived from sheep's wool and is used as an emollient and moisture barrier. It can be very effective for dry or irritated skin, but it is animal-derived and may not suit every person with a known sensitivity.
When skin is already irritated, many families prefer a fragrance-free formula. Added fragrance, essential oils and naturally occurring fragrance allergens such as limonene and linalool may be worth considering, especially for highly reactive skin.
“Natural fragrance” does not automatically mean irritation-free.
Calendula, chamomile, aloe, oat, avocado, coconut oil and other botanical ingredients are common in natural baby care. They may add useful emollient or soothing qualities, but natural ingredients can still cause individual sensitivities.
Not every nappy barrier product needs zinc oxide. Oil-and-wax balms can create an occlusive barrier and may suit routine protection or families using cloth nappies, depending on the product and nappy manufacturer's care instructions.
A zinc-free balm is not necessarily weaker or better. It is simply a different type of formula.

Current Product Status: Current Australian product.
Formula Verification Status: Full current ingredient list verified from the official Mustela Australia product page.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★★★ — Strong Recommendation
Formula Change Summary: No historical Hello Charlie formula comparison could be independently verified. This rating is based on the current Australian formula reviewed in July 2026.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, zinc oxide, caprylic/capric triglyceride, coco-caprylate/caprate, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, glycerin, beeswax, avocado oil, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, ethyl linoleate, sunflower seed oil unsaponifiables, magnesium sulfate, stearalkonium hectorite, levulinic acid, caprylyl glycol, capryloyl glycine, sodium levulinate, undecyl dimethyl oxazoline, propylene carbonate and avocado fruit extract.
Best For: Families wanting a fragrance-free zinc barrier formula with a fully disclosed current ingredient list.
What We Like: The formula is fragrance-free and the current full INCI is clearly disclosed. Zinc oxide provides the barrier function, while glycerin, avocado-derived ingredients and other emollients support the overall formulation. Mustela states that the product contains 98% ingredients of natural origin.
What To Consider: The formula contains beeswax, so it is not vegan. Avocado and other botanical-derived ingredients may not suit every highly reactive baby despite the overall strong formula.
Hello Charlie Verdict: One of the most balanced formulas in this comparison. It combines zinc-based barrier protection, fragrance-free positioning and strong current formula transparency.

Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★★★ — Strong Recommendation
Formula Change Summary: No historical formula comparison was independently established for this update.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Purified water, zinc oxide, coco-caprylate/caprate, glycerin, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, cocoa seed butter, colloidal oat flour, aloe vera leaf juice, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, sunflower seed wax, olive oil unsaponifiables, Rhus verniciflua peel wax, shorea robusta resin, disteardimonium hectorite, Lactobacillus, yacon root juice, alpha-glucan oligosaccharide, maltodextrin, sunflower seed oil, magnesium sulfate, hydroxyacetophenone, caprylyl glycol and 1,2-hexanediol.
Best For: Families looking for a modern, fragrance-free zinc formula with oat, aloe and a clearly published full ingredient list.
What We Like: Strong transparency, non-nano zinc positioning and no synthetic fragrance. The official formula also avoids several ingredient categories that Hello Charlie traditionally prefers to minimise.
What To Consider: Oat and botanicals can still be individual sensitivity considerations. A formula being fragrance-free does not guarantee universal suitability.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A strong contemporary barrier cream with very good formula disclosure and close alignment with Hello Charlie's preferred framework.
Verification source: Bunjie official product page
Current Product Status: Current Australian product confirmed in the brand's official Australian nappy-care range.
Formula Verification Status: Current product and size confirmed, but the complete current INCI was not independently captured in this research pass.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: The product is marketed by Four Cow Farm as an Australian-made 100% natural nappy cream. A complete current ingredient list was not independently captured during this review.
Best For: Families interested in an Australian-made natural nappy cream and who are comfortable checking the current packaging for the complete ingredient list before use.
What We Like: The product remains part of Four Cow Farm's dedicated official nappy-care range, and the brand specifically positions its nappy products for newborn and baby care.
What To Consider: Formula transparency matters. Because we did not independently capture the exact full current INCI, we are deliberately not assigning the highest recommendation tier.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A promising Australian natural option, but we would like complete current formula verification before considering a five-star rating.

Current Recommendation: ★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, lavender oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are identified as key ingredients on the current official product page.
Best For: Families seeking a natural-style zinc cream and who are comfortable with essential oils.
What We Like: Zinc oxide provides a clear barrier function, while the plant oils create an emollient base.
What To Consider: The product contains lavender essential oil. Essential oils may not suit very sensitive, reactive or already inflamed skin. We would also prefer full current INCI disclosure for a more complete formula assessment.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A good natural-style option for families comfortable with lavender essential oil, but not our first fragrance-containing choice for very reactive skin.

Current Recommendation: ★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations
Formula Change Summary: No historical formula comparison was independently established for this update.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, sweet almond oil, sesame seed oil, zinc oxide, beeswax, lanolin, glyceryl linoleate, hectorite, calendula flower extract, chamomile flower extract, fragrance, limonene, linalool, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, geraniol and farnesol.
Best For: Families who prefer a long-established natural-style zinc formula and are comfortable with lanolin, nut-derived oil and fragrance components.
What We Like: Zinc oxide and lanolin provide substantial barrier ingredients, and the full current Australian INCI is clearly published. The formula also includes calendula and chamomile extracts.
What To Consider: Despite being marketed as free from synthetic fragrance, the full formula contains parfum and declared fragrance allergens including limonene, linalool, benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, geraniol and farnesol. It also contains sweet almond oil, sesame oil and lanolin.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A well-established and transparent natural-style nappy cream, but its fragrance allergens and botanical-rich formulation make four stars more appropriate than five under our framework.

Formula Verification Status: Full current ingredient list verified from the official QV Australia product page.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, zinc oxide, dimethicone, mineral oil, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-25, panthenol, methylparaben and xanthan gum. The formula contains 15% zinc oxide.
Best For: Families wanting a fragrance-free, readily available zinc barrier cream, particularly where a richer conventional formula is preferred.
What We Like: The formula is fragrance-free and colour-free, contains 15% zinc oxide and includes panthenol and glycerin. QV also provides a complete ingredient list.
What To Consider: Dimethicone, mineral oil, ceteareth-25 and methylparaben sit outside Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient preference framework.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A good example of why three stars should not be read as “bad”. QV offers a fragrance-free, zinc-based barrier formula that may suit some families very well, but it aligns less closely with our traditional ingredient philosophy.

Formula Verification Status: Current formula verified from the official Bepanthen Australia product page.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Purified water, wool fat or anhydrous lanolin, liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin, dexpanthenol or pro-vitamin B5, almond oil, white beeswax, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and Protegin XN.
Best For: Families wanting a fragrance-free ointment-style barrier and who are comfortable with lanolin and paraffin-based ingredients.
What We Like: The formula is fragrance-free and includes dexpanthenol. The ointment texture is designed to create a barrier without relying on zinc oxide.
What To Consider: The formula contains liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin, lanolin, almond oil and beeswax. These ingredients make it less aligned with Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient preferences and may also matter to vegan families or those with specific sensitivities.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A practical, widely recognised barrier ointment that may suit many families, but less closely matches our traditional plant-forward ingredient framework.
Verification source: Bepanthen Australia official product page
Current Product Status: Current Australian product.
Formula Verification Status: The current official Australian page confirms zinc oxide as the active ingredient. The complete current Australian INCI was not displayed on the official ingredients page reviewed.

Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No historical formula comparison was independently established for the current Australian market version.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide is confirmed as the active ingredient on the official Australian website. We have deliberately not reproduced a full overseas or historical formula as though it were the verified current Australian INCI.
Best For: Families looking for a longstanding, thick zinc-based pharmacy product.
What We Like: Zinc oxide provides an established barrier function, and Sudocrem has a long history as a mainstream nappy-rash product.
What To Consider: We would like to see complete current Australian ingredient disclosure directly on the official product page. Families avoiding fragrance or particular excipients should check the current packaging carefully before use.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A longstanding mainstream option that may suit some families well, but current full-formula transparency is not strong enough for a higher Hello Charlie editorial rating.

Current Product Status: Current Australian product. Direct online availability may vary.
Formula Verification Status: Current active ingredients and documented old-versus-improved formula information verified from the official Nappy Goo website.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: Significant documented reformulation. The manufacturer distinguishes products expiring September 2026 or earlier from its improved formula.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Active ingredients are zinc oxide, hamamelis water or witch hazel water, and melaleuca or tea tree oil. The improved formula also lists lanolin, water, olive oil, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, propylene glycol, beeswax, isododecane, glyceryl oleate, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, alcohol associated with the witch hazel water, hydrogenated castor oil, sodium chloride, disteardimonium hectorite, propylene carbonate and BHT.
Best For: Families interested in a substantial Australian zinc-based formula and who are comfortable with tea tree oil, lanolin and the other ingredients in the current formulation.
What We Like: The company clearly publishes the formula change rather than quietly replacing old product information. Zinc oxide provides the main barrier function.
What To Consider: Tea tree oil can be a sensitivity consideration on already inflamed skin. The current formula also contains lanolin, alcohol and BHT, which are outside Hello Charlie's preferred framework.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A well-known Australian option with useful formula transparency around its reformulation, but several current ingredient choices make it less aligned with Hello Charlie's traditional preferences.
Verification source: Nappy Goo official formula information
Current Product Status: Current Australian product.
Formula Verification Status: Full current ingredient list verified from the official Dermal Therapy Australia product page.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, 15.4% zinc oxide, petrolatum, 5% panthenol, glycerin, mineral oil, ceteareth-20, rice bran wax, stearic acid, cetearyl alcohol, glyceryl oleate, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, benzyl alcohol and hydroxyacetophenone.
Best For: Families looking for a fragrance-free zinc and panthenol formula and who are comfortable with petrolatum and mineral oil.
What We Like: The formula provides 15.4% zinc oxide and 5% panthenol, is fragrance-free, and the complete ingredient list is clearly published.
What To Consider: Petrolatum, mineral oil, ceteareth-20, PEG-100 stearate and benzyl alcohol sit outside Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient preferences.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A transparent, fragrance-free conventional barrier formula with useful active ingredients. Three stars reflects alignment with our ingredient framework, not an opinion that the formula is ineffective or unsafe.
Verification source: Dermal Therapy Australia official product page
Current Product Status: Widely available barrier ingredient comparator; not a dedicated medicated nappy-rash cream.
Formula Verification Status: Included as a barrier comparator because authoritative dermatology and Australian parenting guidance recognise petroleum jelly or petrolatum-containing ointments as nappy-rash barrier options.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: Not applicable to this general barrier comparison.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Petrolatum or petroleum jelly, depending on the exact product selected.
Best For: Families wanting a simple occlusive moisture barrier and who do not require a zinc-based paste.
What We Like: Petroleum jelly forms a substantial moisture barrier, has a very simple function and is specifically recognised in established nappy-rash guidance.
What To Consider: Petrolatum is outside Hello Charlie's traditional ingredient preference framework. Different petroleum-jelly products may contain additional ingredients, so check the exact label.
Hello Charlie Verdict: This is an important reality check for any ingredient-based ranking. Petrolatum may not match Hello Charlie's traditional philosophy, but it is a legitimate and widely recognised barrier ingredient. Our three-star rating is an editorial preference rating, not a safety classification.
Australian parents frequently encounter international products through online retailers, social media, parenting groups and travel. We have included the following popular comparators because they add useful context, but availability, packaging and formulas can vary by country.
Current Product Status: Current international comparator. Australian availability may vary.
Formula Verification Status: Full current ingredient list verified from the official Earth Mama product page.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current Hello Charlie webpage.
Current Recommendation: ★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical Hello Charlie formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Organic olive fruit oil, organic shea butter, organic beeswax, organic jojoba seed oil, organic lavender flower oil, organic calendula extract, organic St John's wort extract, organic chickweed extract, organic plantain leaf extract and organic tea tree leaf oil.
Best For: Families specifically seeking a zinc-free, petroleum-free botanical balm.
What We Like: The full formula is short, clearly disclosed and certified organic by Oregon Tilth. It contains no zinc or petroleum.
What To Consider: The formula contains both lavender and tea tree essential oils and multiple botanicals. A natural and certified organic formula can still be unsuitable for some highly reactive babies.
Hello Charlie Verdict: One of the strongest zinc-free natural balm formulas in the comparison, but essential oils prevent it from being a universal first choice for very sensitive or already inflamed skin.

Current Product Status: Current US product and popular imported comparator. Australian availability may vary.
Formula Verification Status: Full current US active and inactive ingredient list verified from the official Desitin website.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: 40% zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients are petrolatum, cod liver oil, lanolin, corn starch, glycerin, sorbitan sesquioleate, beeswax, tocopheryl acetate, fragrance and pentaerythrityl tetra-di-t-butyl hydroxyhydrocinnamate.
Best For: Families looking for a very thick, maximum-strength 40% zinc paste and who are comfortable with petrolatum, lanolin and fragrance.
What We Like: The very high zinc content creates a substantial barrier, and the complete formula is clearly disclosed by the manufacturer.
What To Consider: This is a very thick formula. It contains petrolatum, cod liver oil, lanolin and fragrance, making it less aligned with Hello Charlie's ingredient preferences.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A useful high-zinc international comparator that illustrates why zinc percentage should not be the only basis for choosing a nappy cream.
Verification source: Desitin official product page
Current Product Status: Current popular US comparator. Australian availability may vary.
Formula Verification Status: Current product confirmed through recent market information, but the complete current manufacturer INCI was not independently captured in this research pass.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Current product information identifies zinc oxide as the barrier active, with oat-related ingredients and beeswax among commonly highlighted formula components. We have not reproduced older full ingredient lists as though they were verified current formulas.
Best For: Families researching popular imported zinc pastes and seeking a middle-ground alternative to very high-zinc 40% products.
What We Like: Triple Paste is widely discussed as a substantial zinc barrier cream and is a useful international comparison point.
What To Consider: Exact current formula verification and Australian market availability are less straightforward than for locally supported products. Families with oat, lanolin or other known sensitivities should check the exact current packaging.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A useful and popular international comparator, but incomplete current formula verification means we would not place it in our highest recommendation tiers.
Current Product Status: International comparator. Availability in Australia can vary.
Formula Verification Status: Exact current full formula was not independently captured during this research pass.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No reliable historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: A thick barrier-paste format marketed for the nappy area. Check the exact current market packaging for the full ingredient list and active ingredients.
Best For: Families comparing imported conventional barrier pastes.
What We Like: Aquaphor is a recognised barrier-care brand and provides another useful example of conventional occlusive skincare positioning.
What To Consider: Do not confuse Aquaphor Baby Diaper Rash Paste with Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment; they are different products. Australian availability, exact formula and market version should be checked before purchase.
Hello Charlie Verdict: A relevant international comparator, but not a product we would rate more highly without complete current formula verification for the exact version being purchased.
Current Product Status: Current international comparator; Australian distribution was not independently confirmed.
Formula Verification Status: Partial current product verification. A complete current INCI was not independently captured.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation: Historical rating not publicly verifiable.
Current Recommendation: ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
Formula Change Summary: No historical formula comparison was established.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Current product information identifies 40% zinc oxide and Peruvian balsam among its highlighted formula features. A complete current ingredient list was not independently verified in this review.
Best For: Families researching newer maximum-strength international zinc pastes.
What We Like: Its 40% zinc positioning makes it a useful comparison with other maximum-strength zinc pastes.
What To Consider: Complete formula transparency and Australian distribution were not independently established. Peruvian balsam may also be a sensitivity consideration for some people.
Hello Charlie Verdict: An interesting newer high-zinc international comparator, but incomplete full-formula verification means a cautious three-star rating is appropriate.
Nappy Goo is the clearest example in this review of why an old ingredient assessment should not automatically be applied to the current product.
The brand publishes different inactive ingredients for products with an expiry date of September 2026 or earlier and for its improved formula.
The earlier inactive formula was listed as:
Calcium hydroxide, oleic acid, olive oil, purified water and wool fat or lanolin.
The newer inactive formula is listed as:
Lanolin, water, olive oil, polyglyceryl-2 dipolyhydroxystearate, propylene glycol, beeswax, isododecane, glyceryl oleate, polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, alcohol associated with hamamelis water, hydrogenated castor oil, sodium chloride, disteardimonium hectorite, propylene carbonate and butylated hydroxytoluene or BHT.
The active ingredients remain zinc oxide, witch hazel water and tea tree oil according to the brand's current formula information.
This is not a reason to automatically call the old formula “better” or the new formula “worse”. It simply demonstrates that the product has changed materially and should be assessed on its current formula rather than an old review.
A comprehensive cheat sheet should also be honest about products that may have appeared in older guides but could not be confidently verified as current products during this research pass.
No current GAIA nappy cream was located in the official Australian Change Time range reviewed on 10 July 2026. The range displayed nappy bags, cleansing pads and wipes. We are not calling an older GAIA nappy cream definitively discontinued without direct confirmation from the brand.
No current nappy-specific cream was located in the official Australian Wotnot range reviewed during this research pass. This does not necessarily prove permanent discontinuation.
No current nappy-specific balm was located in the official Australian baby range during this research pass. We have therefore not included an unverified older formula in the main current comparison.
No current baby nappy balm was located in the official Australian range reviewed for this update.
The official brand website was under maintenance when checked on 10 July 2026, so we could not confidently verify a current formula or availability. Rather than reuse potentially outdated information, we have left the product out of the main rankings.
B.box Nappy Barrier Cream received international media coverage in 2024, but we could not verify a current official Australian product page during the July 2026 research pass. It is therefore not included in the main current-product ranking.
There is no single best nappy rash cream for every baby. For families prioritising Hello Charlie's ingredient and transparency preferences, Mustela Vitamin Barrier Cream and Bunjie Nappy & Barrier Cream were our strongest current picks in this research pass.
However, a fragrance-free conventional formula such as QV may suit some babies better, while a thick 40% zinc paste may be preferred in another situation. Persistent, severe or unusual rashes should be professionally assessed rather than managed solely by changing creams.
Zinc oxide is a widely used skin-protective barrier ingredient in nappy creams. It helps create a layer between skin and moisture or irritants. The most suitable zinc percentage and texture depend on the individual baby and how the cream is being used.
No. A product containing 40% zinc oxide is not automatically better than one containing 15% zinc oxide. A high-zinc paste is usually thicker, while lighter formulas can be easier to spread and remove. Formula quality, other ingredients, skin sensitivity and the intended use all matter.
Petroleum jelly is recognised as a barrier option in established nappy-rash guidance, including information from Raising Children Network and DermNet. It creates an occlusive layer that helps protect skin from moisture.
Hello Charlie traditionally prefers other ingredient types where practical, which is why petrolatum-based formulas may score lower in our editorial framework. A lower star rating does not mean petroleum jelly is officially classified as unsafe.
They are different formulations.
QV Baby Barrier Cream contains 15% zinc oxide and is fragrance-free, but also contains dimethicone, mineral oil and methylparaben.
Bepanthen Nappy Rash Ointment is a zinc-free ointment using lanolin, paraffins, dexpanthenol and almond oil.
Sudocrem is a thick zinc-based product, although the full current Australian ingredient list was not displayed on the official Australian ingredients page reviewed.
The better choice depends on your baby's skin, sensitivities, the type of barrier you want and the advice of your healthcare professional where appropriate.
Not every baby needs barrier cream at every change. Some families use one routinely, while others use it when skin is more vulnerable, during diarrhoea, overnight or when early redness appears.
The more important basics are frequent nappy changes, gentle cleaning, allowing the area to dry where possible and avoiding unnecessary irritation.
For very sensitive or already inflamed skin, a fragrance-free formula is often a sensible starting point because it removes one potential source of irritation. However, fragrance-free does not guarantee that a product will suit every baby.
They can for some babies. Lavender, tea tree and other essential oils are present in several natural nappy products. Some families use them without difficulty, while highly reactive or compromised skin may be more sensitive.
“Natural” should not be treated as a guarantee of universal tolerance.
A simple, fragrance-free formula with good ingredient transparency can be a useful starting point, but the nappy area can also be affected by conditions other than ordinary irritant dermatitis.
For persistent or significant rashes, especially in a baby with eczema or other diagnosed skin conditions, professional advice is more useful than relying on a general product ranking.
Check the guidance from your particular cloth-nappy manufacturer. Some oily, waxy or very thick barrier products may be harder to wash out of certain fabrics, and some families use a disposable or reusable liner between the cream and the nappy.
Do not assume that every product labelled natural, zinc-free or cloth-friendly will suit every cloth-nappy system.
Different forms of nappy-area dermatitis can look different, and Candida can be one cause. Online descriptions or photographs are not a substitute for diagnosis, especially because bacterial infection, eczema, psoriasis and other conditions can also affect the nappy area.
Seek professional advice when the rash is persistent, worsening, unusual or not responding as expected.
Seek medical advice if the rash is getting worse, persistent, spreading, blistering, crusting, associated with pimples or open sores, causing significant discomfort, or accompanied by fever or other signs that your baby is unwell.
A cream comparison can help with product choices, but it cannot diagnose the cause of a rash.
This cheat sheet is an independent editorial comparison designed to help families understand nappy rash creams, barrier ingredients, formulas and product changes more easily. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or a substitute for advice from a doctor, pharmacist, maternal and child health nurse or other qualified healthcare professional.
Hello Charlie has not independently laboratory-tested the products listed. Product formulas, availability, packaging, ingredient lists, claims and market versions can change. Always check the current product label before purchase and use, particularly where allergies or known sensitivities are involved.
Where formula verification is marked as partial, the product has been included because it remains a useful market comparator, but the exact complete current ingredient list was not independently captured during this research pass. That distinction is deliberate.
Our star ratings reflect Hello Charlie's own editorial ingredient and transparency preferences. They are not official safety assessments. A three-star product may be a very practical choice for some families, while a five-star product may still contain botanicals, oats, essential oils, nut-derived ingredients or other components that do not suit every baby.
Nappy-area rashes can have different causes. Seek professional advice for persistent, worsening, severe, blistering, crusting, spreading or otherwise concerning rashes, or when your baby appears unwell.
