Natural & Organic Baby Shampoo - Cheat Sheet - Hello Charlie

Best Natural Baby Shampoo Australia: 38 Products Reviewed

, by Hello Charlie Blogs, 51 min reading time

Last updated: 10 July 2026

Most babies do not need a complicated haircare routine. In many families, a mild multi-purpose wash is enough for the early months. But once babies grow more hair, become active toddlers, start swimming, or simply get food, sunscreen and dirt into everything, a dedicated baby shampoo can become genuinely useful.

This is why Hello Charlie has been comparing baby shampoo ingredients for years. The original version of this Cheat Sheet was first published in December 2015 and has been updated repeatedly since then. For this 2026 review, we have deliberately preserved every one of the 31 products from the existing article, including discontinued and historical products, because old formula history matters. It shows how the market has changed, which brands have genuinely improved, and which products are simply relying on familiar “natural” marketing language.

We have also added seven new market-research products, bringing this update to 38 full review entries. That includes newer dedicated baby shampoos, fragrance-free alternatives, current Australian pharmacy products and natural brands that deserve either praise or closer scrutiny.

Quick Verdict

Best dedicated baby shampoo currently stocked by Hello Charlie: Wotnot Natural Baby Shampoo.

Best simple unscented multi-purpose option: Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented Castile Soap, used correctly and diluted as directed.

Best current 2-in-1 options in this guide: Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash, Sanctum Baby Shampoo & Wash and Fiorley Natural Baby Shampoo & Body Wash.

Biggest formula improvement: Cherub Rubs Organic Baby Shampoo, moving from the original ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families tier to ★★★★★ — Strong Recommendation after a meaningful formula change.

How We Rate Baby Shampoo

This is an editorial ingredient-comparison guide, not a claim that one formula is medically “safe” and another is medically “unsafe”. We assess formulas against Hello Charlie’s long-standing preferences: simpler and more transparent ingredient lists, fragrance-free formulas where possible, full disclosure of scent ingredients, fewer ingredients outside our preferred framework, and meaningful formulation choices rather than vague “natural” marketing.

★★★★★ — Strong Recommendation
Strongly aligns with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient and transparency criteria.

★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations
A good overall option, with one or more ingredients, formulation choices or transparency points worth considering.

★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families
May still suit some families, but it aligns less closely with Hello Charlie's preferred ingredient framework.

Historical rating conversion: the old Green Light group is preserved as the original ★★★★★ tier, the old Orange Light group as ★★★★☆, and the old Red Light group as ★★★☆☆. This lets you see both the original assessment and the current one without deleting the article’s history.

What Changed in This 2026 Update?

Cherub Rubs: ★★★☆☆ → ★★★★★ after the current formula removed the old reason for the limited rating and now clearly discloses a glucoside-based formula with organic oils and essential oils.
Aromababy: ★★★☆☆ → ★★★★☆ because the current official formula no longer lists sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, although benzyl alcohol and cocamidopropyl betaine remain.
Curash: ★★★☆☆ → ★★★★☆ after the newer Gentle Shampoo & Conditioner formula removed the old fragrance and MCI/MI preservative combination.
GAIA: ★★★☆☆ → ★★★★☆ because the current successor formula no longer uses the old sodium hydroxymethylglycinate preservative, although benzyl alcohol and essential oils remain.
New market additions: Wotnot Natural Baby Shampoo, Fiorley Natural Baby Shampoo & Body Wash, Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Fragrance Free Shampoo & Wash, Ecostore Fragrance Free Baby Body Wash & Shampoo, MooGoo Baby Gentle Shampoo, QV Baby 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner and AVO Baby Gentle Hair & Body Wash.

Original ★★★★★ Products — Historically the Green Light Group

These 11 products were the original strongest-recommendation products. We have kept every one of them and re-checked current formula or market status wherever possible.

1. Bubba Organics Baby Hair & Bath Wash

Current Product Status: Still found through Australian retailers; the historic Hello Charlie range is no longer active.
Formula Verification Status: Partially verified from current retailer listings; the official brand website could not be independently confirmed at review date.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: No major adverse formula change was identified from the current information available. The product still appears to use an aloe-forward base with mild glucoside cleansers and botanical extracts.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Aloe vera juice, decyl glucoside and/or coco-glucoside, glycerin and botanical oils or extracts. Exact scent-specific INCI lists may vary, so check the pack you are buying.

Best For: Families wanting an Australian baby hair-and-body wash with a botanical scent.

What We Like: The aloe-based approach and mild glucoside cleansing system are still well aligned with the original reason this product sat in the strongest recommendation group.

What To Consider: The formula varies by scent and the current official brand source was not fully verifiable. Babies with very reactive skin may still do better with fragrance-free options.

Hello Charlie Verdict: We are keeping the strong recommendation, but with a clear transparency caveat: check the current bottle because the latest official formula could not be independently confirmed from the brand website.

2. ChamonixRain Organics Coconut Baby Wash & Shampoo

Current Product Status: Current market product found through Australian retailers.
Formula Verification Status: Current retailer ingredient list checked; official direct product source was not readily available.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: The available formula remains broadly consistent with the original review.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Purified water, organic aloe vera juice, coco glucoside, guar gum, citric acid, coconut absolute oil, potassium sorbate, a naturally derived preservative/fragrance system, organic glycerin and botanical oils/extracts including lavender, coconut, avocado, evening primrose, olive leaf, calendula, chamomile and rosehip.

Best For: Parents who prefer a botanical, coconut-forward shampoo and wash rather than a fragrance-free product.

What We Like: Aloe, gentle glucoside cleansing and a broad range of plant oils and extracts remain the strengths of this formula.

What To Consider: The term “parfum” appears in some listings even when described as a natural preservative system. We would prefer maximum ingredient transparency, especially for babies with known fragrance sensitivity.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still a strong formula under the Hello Charlie framework, with the main caveat being the need for clearer disclosure around the natural fragrance/preservative component.

3. Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap – Baby Unscented

Current Product Status: Current product and currently stocked by Hello Charlie at the time of review.
Formula Verification Status: Current Hello Charlie and official brand formula verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: No meaningful negative formula change identified.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, organic coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, organic palm kernel oil, organic olive oil, organic hemp oil, organic jojoba oil, citric acid and tocopherol.

Best For: Families wanting a simple, unscented, multi-purpose Castile soap with a very short ingredient list.

What We Like: No synthetic fragrance, no conventional detergent blend and excellent ingredient transparency. It remains one of the simplest formulas in this guide.

What To Consider: Castile soap is alkaline and concentrated. Dilute as directed, avoid the eye area and do not assume that a five-star ingredient rating means every baby will find it equally suitable.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still one of our strongest ingredient-first choices, especially for families who value fragrance-free simplicity and multi-purpose use.

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Current official product information verified.

Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: No adverse change identified. The brand continues to position this as a simple olive-oil Castile wash without added fragrance or conventional preservatives.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Rainwater, saponified extra virgin olive oil, organic echinacea extract and citric acid.

Best For: Parents who want an ultra-simple Castile baby wash and prefer olive oil rather than coconut-oil-heavy soap.

What We Like: A very short formula, no added fragrance and no conventional foaming additives.

What To Consider: Like other true soaps, it is not pH-neutral and may not suit every baby or every scalp. Keep away from eyes and stop use if dryness develops.

Hello Charlie Verdict: A genuinely simple formula that still deserves its original strong recommendation.

5. Jack N’ Jill Kids Shampoo & Body Wash

Current Product Status: Current product; Hello Charlie product page exists but the item was out of stock when checked.
Formula Verification Status: Current official brand INCI verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: The current Uplifting Botanical Blend differs from the older Serenity formula, but the overall ingredient profile remains strong. The present formula uses glucoside cleansers, glycerin, quinoa extract, panthenol and transparent essential oils.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, lauryl glucoside, decyl glucoside, glycerin, gluconolactone, xanthan gum, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, citric acid, sodium phytate, ylang ylang oil, bitter orange flower oil, orange peel oil, panthenol, quillaja extract, palmarosa oil, calcium gluconate, quinoa seed extract, Maclura leaf extract and coconut oil, plus naturally occurring fragrance allergens.

What We Like: Mild glucoside cleansers, transparent essential-oil disclosure and a formula that remains free from synthetic parfum.

What To Consider: It is fragranced with essential oils, so fragrance-reactive children may prefer a genuinely fragrance-free shampoo.

Hello Charlie Verdict: A formula change, but not a downgrade. It remains a strong recommendation.

6. Jackson Reece Kinder By Nature Natural Baby Shampoo

Current Product Status: Historical product; no clear current standalone baby shampoo listing was found in the present Kinder by Nature range.
Formula Verification Status: Historic formula only; no current formula could be independently verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆ Good Recommendation With Considerations

Formula Change Summary: The lower current rating reflects availability and verification uncertainty, not evidence that the old formula became worse.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Last verified historical formula used mild cleansing agents with botanical ingredients and ylang ylang.

Best For: Historical reference for parents comparing older Jackson Reece or Kinder by Nature stock.

What We Like: The historic formula was the reason it originally earned the top recommendation.

What To Consider: Do not rely on the old ingredient list when buying old stock, imports or a renamed successor. Check the actual pack.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Worth considering only because the current product/formula could not be re-verified. The historical five-star assessment is preserved.

7. Little Innoscents Spearmint Orange Hair & Body Wash

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Current brand product information checked; formula remains materially aligned with the historic review.

Best For: Families wanting an Australian natural hair-and-body wash with a fresh botanical scent.

What We Like: Aloe-based cleansing, mild glucosides and good botanical transparency.

What To Consider: Contains essential oils and is not fragrance-free. Check the current pack if your child is highly fragrance-sensitive.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still sits comfortably in the strong recommendation tier.

8. Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Current official product and fragrance-free claims verified; regional ingredient lists can vary, so pack verification is still recommended.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: No significant negative change was identified. The product remains marketed as fragrance-free and 99% naturally derived.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: The historically reviewed formula used water, coco-glucoside, polyglyceryl-4 caprate, inulin, galactoarabinan, citric acid, sodium benzoate, propanediol, sunflower unsaponifiables and avocado fruit extract. Check the local pack for the current regional INCI.

Best For: Newborns who need a dedicated foaming scalp cleanser rather than a general body wash.

What We Like: Fragrance-free positioning, a mild cleansing system and a formula specifically designed for newborn scalp care.

What To Consider: Regional formulas may differ. Five stars here reflects the verified ingredient framework, not a medical claim about cradle cap treatment.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Remains a strong recommendation, with the usual instruction to verify the current Australian pack.

9. Sanctum Baby Shampoo & Wash

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Current official full INCI verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

What To Consider: Contains essential oils and naturally occurring fragrance allergens, so it is not fragrance-free.

Hello Charlie Verdict: A formula update without a rating downgrade. Still one of the strongest conventional liquid wash options in the guide.

10. Weleda Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash

Current Product Status: Current product and currently stocked by Hello Charlie in 200ml and 400ml sizes at the time of review.
Formula Verification Status: Current Hello Charlie formula and stock status verified.

What We Like: Mild cleansing, clear ingredient list and long-term market track record.

What To Consider: Despite “natural fragrance” positioning, it is still fragranced and contains naturally occurring limonene and linalool. Fragrance-free remains preferable for some very sensitive babies.

Hello Charlie Verdict: A long-standing strong recommendation and one of the easiest five-star options to buy directly from Hello Charlie.

Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★ Strong Recommendation

Formula Change Summary: The present formula differs from the older 3-in-1 formula, but it remains a strong ingredient match. Colloidal oatmeal is now more prominent and the preservative system has changed.

Best For: Families wanting one natural product for washing and bath bubbles.

What We Like: Aloe-first formula, colloidal oatmeal and no synthetic fragrance or benzyl alcohol.

What To Consider: Contains orange peel oil, so this is not a fully unscented option.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still a strong recommendation after reformulation. The separate Wotnot Natural Baby Shampoo is also now included as a 2026 market addition below.

Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆ Good Recommendation With Considerations
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆ Good Recommendation With Considerations

Formula Change Summary: The core issue remains fragrance transparency. The brand describes its fragrances as natural blends, but the standard scented version still does not give the same level of individual fragrance disclosure as our preferred five-star formulas.

Best For: Families who like the Burt’s Bees baby range and are comfortable with a scented formula.

What We Like: The brand has a high natural-origin positioning and the formula avoids several conventional ingredients.

What To Consider: The standard version remains scented and the fragrance blend is not fully ingredient-by-ingredient transparent.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still worth considering, but the fragrance-free Burt’s Bees version added later in this article is the better fit for our strongest recommendation tier.

14. Ecostore Baby Shampoo / Baby Body Wash & Shampoo

Formula Verification Status: Current official formula checked.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026

Best For: Families who like Aromababy and are comfortable with a scented, mid-tier formula.

What We Like: The removal of the old formaldehyde-releasing preservative is a meaningful improvement.

What To Consider: Cocamidopropyl betaine, benzyl alcohol and essential oils mean it still does not reach our strongest tier.

What To Consider: Current status and current formula are not verified.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Historical ★★★☆☆ assessment preserved under the current recommendation framework.

28. Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo

Current Product Status: Current product.
Formula Verification Status: Current official Australian product information verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families

Formula Change Summary: Johnson’s has simplified its formulas over time, but the current classic baby shampoo remains fragranced.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Current official Australian product information states no added parabens, phthalates, sulfates or dyes; the formula still contains fragrance.

Best For: Families who prioritise mainstream availability and are comfortable with added fragrance.

What We Like: The brand has improved and simplified the classic formula compared with older generations.

What To Consider: Added fragrance remains enough to keep it in the limited recommendation tier under our framework.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Improved historically, but still ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families under our ingredient-first natural baby shampoo criteria.

29. Nature’s Care Paw Paw Baby Shampoo and Body Wash

Current Product Status: Historical product; no reliable current official listing for this exact baby wash was found.
Formula Verification Status: Historic formula only.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families

Formula Change Summary: No current formula available to reassess.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: The historic formula used plant-derived cleansers and paw paw extract but also included added fragrance.

Best For: Historical comparison only.

What We Like: A useful example of why “natural” positioning alone does not determine a Hello Charlie rating.

What To Consider: The old formula was fragranced and the current product status is unclear.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Historical ★★★☆☆ rating preserved under the current recommendation framework.

30. Organic Care Berry Bliss Shampoo & Conditioner

Current Product Status: Current successor sold as OC Naturals 3-in-1 Berry Bliss Conditioning Shampoo & Body Wash.
Formula Verification Status: Current official/major Australian retailer full INCI verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families

Formula Change Summary: The product has been renamed and reformulated over time, but it still contains added fragrance and phenoxyethanol.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Water, sodium coco-sulfate, coco-glucoside, glycerin, lauryl lactyl lactate, glyceryl oleate, phenoxyethanol, fragrance, citric acid, polyquaternium-10, sodium benzoate, panthenol, potassium sorbate, sodium sulfate, tocopherol, cocamidopropyl betaine and raspberry fruit extract.

Best For: Older children who want an inexpensive, sweet-scented 3-in-1 and are not shopping to Hello Charlie’s strict baby-shampoo standard.

What We Like: Plant-derived cleansers and transparent current ingredient disclosure.

What To Consider: Added fragrance and phenoxyethanol keep it in the limited tier. Marketing words such as “organic” or “natural” do not override the actual INCI.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still ★★★☆☆ — Suitable for Some Families under this framework.

31. Sebamed Shampoo for Delicate Scalp

Current Product Status: Current product internationally.
Formula Verification Status: Current market formula remains materially aligned with the historic INCI.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families
Current Recommendation Rating: ★★★☆☆ Suitable for Some Families

Formula Change Summary: No meaningful improvement that changes the rating was identified.

Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: A conventional surfactant system including cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, disodium cocoamphodiacetate and sodium laureth sulfate, with chamomile extract, PEG ingredients, alcohol, parfum, benzyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate.

Best For: Families specifically seeking Sebamed’s pH-focused approach and who are comfortable with fragrance and conventional cosmetic ingredients.

What We Like: Long-established product with transparent functional positioning.

What To Consider: Fragrance, SLES, PEGs, benzyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol make it a poor fit for our preferred natural baby shampoo framework.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Still a limited recommendation.

Best For: Families wanting a widely available fragrance-free supermarket/pharmacy-style option with plant-based cleansers.

What We Like: No added fragrance, no CAPB, no PEGs, no SLES and good ingredient disclosure.

What To Consider: Benzyl alcohol keeps it in the three-star tier under the same standard we have applied historically across this Cheat Sheet.

Hello Charlie Verdict: A worthwhile fragrance-free option, but not a five-star formula under our current method.

36. MooGoo Baby Gentle Shampoo

Best For: Families wanting a dedicated baby shampoo from MooGoo rather than the standard Milk Shampoo.

What We Like: Very clear ingredient disclosure and a gentler baby-focused positioning.

What To Consider: Contains cocamidopropyl betaine, laureth-4 and added fragrance, so it stays at ★★★★☆ — Good Recommendation With Considerations.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Worth considering and more baby-specific than MooGoo’s general Milk Shampoo, but not a five-star match for our framework.

Current Product Status: Market Research Addition — current Australian product.
Formula Verification Status: Current official full INCI verified.
Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026

What We Like: Fragrance-free, colour-free and clearly formulated for delicate baby hair.

What To Consider: The paraben preservative system puts it outside Hello Charlie’s preferred framework.

Hello Charlie Verdict: One star under this editorial method, despite the genuine strengths of being fragrance-free and widely used for sensitive skin.

38. AVO Baby Gentle Hair & Body Wash

Current Product Status: Market Research Addition — current Australian product.

Best For: Families specifically drawn to avocado oil and botanical oils, but who are comfortable with a more complex preservative system.

What We Like: Organic Australian avocado oil and good botanical disclosure.

What To Consider: Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate is the decisive concern here; phenoxyethanol, cocamidopropyl betaine and multiple essential oils add further reasons not to place it in the top tiers.

Hello Charlie Verdict: Limited recommendation. Natural marketing does not override the actual ingredient list.

How to Choose a Baby Shampoo Without Getting Lost in Marketing

Start with the full ingredient list, not the front label. Words like “natural”, “organic”, “botanical”, “dermatologist tested” and “for sensitive skin” can be useful context, but they do not tell you the full formula. This Cheat Sheet deliberately rates the actual ingredients and disclosure rather than the marketing headline.

Fragrance-free is often the simplest starting point for very sensitive skin. But “fragrance-free”, “unscented”, “natural fragrance” and “essential-oil scented” are not the same thing. Some fragrance-free formulas still contain botanical extracts with a natural smell, while essential oils can contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens.

Remember that ★★★★★ is not a medical guarantee. A simple natural formula can still irritate an individual baby, and a ★★★☆☆ formula in this guide may still be recommended by a health professional for a specific skin condition. Our ratings reflect Hello Charlie’s ingredient preferences, not a diagnosis or treatment plan.

Check the bottle every time you repurchase. Cosmetic formulas change. The biggest lesson from this 2026 review is that some brands have genuinely improved. Cherub Rubs, Aromababy, Curash and GAIA all demonstrate why a ten-year-old ingredient rating should not be blindly repeated forever.

Major Formula Changes Worth Remembering

  • Cherub Rubs Organic Baby Shampoo: moved from ★★★☆☆ to ★★★★★ after a major formula improvement and clearer current ingredient disclosure.
  • Aromababy Pure Hair Cleanse: moved from ★★★☆☆ to ★★★★☆ after sodium hydroxymethylglycinate disappeared from the current official formula.
  • Curash: the newer Gentle Shampoo & Conditioner formula no longer matches the old MCI/MI and fragrance-containing formula reviewed historically.
  • GAIA: the current 2-in-1 successor no longer lists the old sodium hydroxymethylglycinate preservative.
  • Jack N’ Jill, Sanctum and Wotnot: formulas or product formats have changed, but all remain in the strong recommendation tier.
