Eco nappies sound like they should be biodegradable.
But the truth is more complicated.
Some eco disposable nappies use plant-based materials, FSC certified pulp or more responsible manufacturing processes. Some parts of a nappy may be biodegradable. But that does not mean the whole nappy will fully biodegrade in normal landfill conditions.
This guide explains what biodegradable nappy claims really mean, what to watch for, and how to choose better disposable nappies without falling for greenwashing.
A disposable nappy is not one simple material.
It is designed to absorb liquid, keep moisture away from skin, fit securely, prevent leaks and hold together during use.
That usually means several layers and materials, including:
Because nappies are complex, it is rare for a disposable nappy to be fully biodegradable in real-world landfill conditions.
Biodegradable means a material can break down through natural processes, usually with help from microbes, oxygen, moisture and suitable conditions.
But landfill conditions are not the same as a compost system. Landfills are often compacted, low in oxygen and not designed to help nappies break down quickly.
That is why a biodegradable claim needs detail. Which part is biodegradable? Under what conditions? How long does it take? Is it independently tested?
The ACCC’s environmental claims guidance says environmental and sustainability claims must be true, accurate and based on reasonable grounds.
It also warns that broad claims such as “eco-friendly”, “green” or “sustainable” can mislead consumers if they are not clearly explained.
For nappies, this means parents should look beyond the front of the pack.
When comparing eco nappies, ask:

The fact that most eco nappies are not fully biodegradable does not mean they are the same as conventional nappies.
Good eco nappies may offer:
The key is honesty. Eco nappies are usually a better disposable choice, not a perfect zero-waste product.
Cloth nappies can be a great lower-waste option, but they do not suit every family full-time.
Many parents use a mixed system:

The best eco nappy still needs to fit your baby.
Try samples before buying bulk, especially if your baby is between sizes or prone to leaks.
Hello Charlie’s Eco Nappy Samples can help you compare fit and absorbency.
Eco nappies are not usually fully biodegradable in normal landfill conditions.
That does not make them useless. It simply means parents deserve clear, honest information.
Choose nappies with transparent materials, meaningful certifications, good fit and reliable performance. Use cloth or reusable wipes where they work for your family, and avoid brands that make vague promises without detail.
