Best Natural Sunscreens in Australia: 80 Products Compared

Last researched and updated: 10 July 2026
Back in 2023, Hello Charlie researched 62 popular Australian sunscreens. Since then, the natural and mineral sunscreen market has expanded, formulas have changed, new brands have appeared, and Australia has experienced major sunscreen testing, recall and regulatory developments.
So for this update, we did not simply add a few names to an old list. We rebuilt the cheat sheet around a more transparent framework and reviewed 80 natural, mineral, zinc and relevant comparator sunscreens, including products that are not stocked by Hello Charlie.
Our approach is simple: a short ingredient list alone is not enough. We look at the complete picture—UV filters, formula quality, sensitive-skin suitability, practicality, SPF level, water resistance where relevant, current formula evidence, product status, and significant recall or regulatory history.
The best sunscreen is not the one with the most natural-looking label. It is one that offers reliable protection, suits the user, is applied generously and is reapplied correctly.
For a minimalist high-SPF formula, MOTHER SPF Face & Body SPF50 stands out. For a rich high-zinc formula, Avocado Zinc SPF50 is compelling. For a premium mineral face sunscreen, Emma Lewisham Sunceutical SPF50 is one of our strongest luxury picks. For sensitive outdoor family use, SURFMUD Surfbaby Sensitive SPF30 is a Hello Charlie favourite. For a longstanding natural family formula, Wotnot Natural Sunscreen SPF30 remains a strong choice.
But the biggest lesson of the 2025–2026 sunscreen controversy is that ingredients alone do not prove SPF performance. Regulatory status, recall history, test evidence and product integrity matter too.
For each product, we record:
Where the full current Australian ingredient list was not accessible, we say so. We do not label a formula “fully verified” unless we found an appropriate current source. We also avoid inventing an old recommendation rating when the original rating cannot be independently verified from the current public 2023 article page.
Our standout formulas. We generally like the UV-filter approach, formula choices, transparency and suitability for the intended use.
Good options with plenty to like, but there may be a lower SPF, richer texture, more complex formula, premium price, import limitations or other trade-offs.
These can still be useful, especially as cosmetic face sunscreens, but may involve lower SPF, regional formula differences, more complex formulas or other compromises.
This category includes exact products affected by recalls, ARTG cancellation, lower-than-claimed SPF concerns, significant product-integrity issues or unresolved regulatory uncertainty. It is not a blanket judgement on every product made by the same brand.
Using sunscreen is better than avoiding sunscreen because you have not found a “perfect” natural formula. Cancer Council recommends sun protection when UV levels are 3 or above and advises using enough sunscreen—about seven teaspoons or 35 mL for full adult-body coverage—applying 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplying every two hours, and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. Use it alongside protective clothing, shade, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Formula Checked Date: 10 July 2026
Original Recommendation Rating: Historical rating not publicly verifiable from the current 2023 article page.
Current Recommendation Rating: Highly Recommended
Formula Change Summary: The brand previously sold a Face & Body SPF30. The current SPF50 version uses more zinc oxide and adds tapioca starch to help manage shine.
Current Ingredients or Key Ingredients: Non-nano zinc oxide 227.5 mg/g (22.75%), medium-chain triglycerides, castor oil, coco octanoate/decanoate, coconut oil, candelilla wax, hydrogenated castor oil, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, vitamin E, isostearic acid and tapioca starch.
Best For: Families wanting a minimalist, fragrance-free, high-SPF zinc formula.
What We Like: The ingredient list is short for an SPF50 sunscreen, zinc oxide is the only declared active UV filter, and the current formula is clearly disclosed.
What To Consider: It is a rich, waterless zinc formula, so people who prefer ultra-light fluids may find it heavier than a conventional facial sunscreen.
Hello Charlie Verdict: One of the strongest minimalist formulas in this cheat sheet and a very good starting point for ingredient-conscious families.

CHOICE reported in June 2025 that 16 of 20 tested SPF50/50+ sunscreens did not meet their label claims in its commissioned testing. The TGA then investigated a group of sunscreens sharing the same base formulation as Ultra Violette Lean Screen SPF50+. By March 2026, the TGA reported that all 19 sunscreens in that review had been cancelled from the ARTG and recalled.
The important takeaway is not that sunscreen should be avoided. The TGA continues to state that sunscreens are proven to protect against harmful UV radiation and that the benefits continue to outweigh the risks. The lesson for us is that a beautiful ingredient list, “mineral” label or high zinc percentage is not enough on its own.
There is no single universally useful definition. In everyday shopping language, “natural sunscreen” usually means a sunscreen using zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both as mineral UV filters. But the rest of the formula may still include synthetic emollients, polymers, preservatives, silicones, fragrances or UV-boosting ingredients.
That is why we look beyond front-of-pack claims such as “natural”, “mineral”, “reef safe” or “non-toxic”.
We generally favour zinc oxide because it can provide broad-spectrum UVA and UVB coverage as a single mineral active. Titanium dioxide can also be an effective UV filter and is often combined with zinc oxide or other filters. The quality of the finished product matters more than declaring one ingredient universally “good” or “bad”.
The TGA's literature review concluded that, on current evidence, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles are unlikely to cause harm when used in sunscreens as directed. Most studies found no penetration or only minimal penetration of the outer skin layer, making meaningful systemic absorption highly unlikely.
Some shoppers still prefer non-nano zinc, and many products in this guide use it. But we do not tell families that nano zinc is automatically toxic or unsafe.
We do not use that blanket language. In its 2025 review of seven active sunscreen ingredients, the TGA considered several filters low risk at assessed exposures and recommended tighter regulatory controls for homosalate and oxybenzone. Different UV filters have different evidence profiles; they should not all be treated as identical.
Most importantly: do not avoid sunscreen simply because you have not found a perfectly natural product.
Yes. Australian research and public reporting have highlighted that some products marketed as mineral sunscreens contain ingredients such as butyloctyl salicylate or ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, which may contribute to UV absorption or SPF boosting even when zinc oxide is the only declared active sunscreen ingredient.
This does not automatically make a product unsafe. It does mean that “mineral active” and “minimal natural formula” are not the same thing.
Cancer Council advises an average adult to use about 35 mL—roughly seven teaspoons—for a full-body application: one teaspoon for each arm, each leg, the front of the body, the back, and the face/neck/ears combined. Apply about 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, as well as after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.
For babies under six months, shade, clothing and a suitable hat should be the first line of defence. For older babies and children, many families prefer simple zinc-based products, especially fragrance-free formulas designed for sensitive skin.
Standout options in this guide include Little Urchin Natural Clear Zinc SPF50+, SURFMUD Surfbaby Sensitive SPF30, MOTHER SPF50, Thinkbaby SPF50+ and Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Mineral SPF50.
Natural does not automatically mean hypoallergenic. Essential oils, fragrance and botanical extracts can all cause reactions in some people. For sensitive skin, we generally prefer simpler formulas, no unnecessary fragrance, and a product that can be applied without excessive rubbing.
Some options worth investigating include MooGoo Clear Zinc SPF40, MOTHER SPF50, SURFMUD Surfbaby Sensitive SPF30, Maxiblock Mineral Clear Zinc SPF50 and Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF50.
No. SPF depends on more than mixing zinc oxide into oils or butter. Dispersion, film formation, stability, manufacturing consistency and formal SPF testing all matter. Cancer Council does not recommend homemade sunscreen.
No. A 25% zinc sunscreen is not automatically better than a 20% zinc sunscreen. Particle characteristics, dispersion, film formation, other ingredients, stability, manufacturing quality and SPF testing all affect performance.
This cheat sheet is an independent editorial comparison designed to help families understand sunscreen products, formulas and product history more easily. It is not medical advice and Hello Charlie has not independently laboratory-tested the SPF of the products listed.
Formulas, availability, ARTG status, recalls, batch status and product names can change. Always check the current product label, batch information and official recall notices before purchase or use. Follow all directions for application and reapplication.
Where formula verification is marked as partial, the product was included as a useful market comparator but the exact current Australian full INCI was not independently captured in this research pass. That distinction is deliberate.
