Our strongest current all-round liquid baby wash pick is Jack N Jill Baby Bath Wash - Fragrance Free. It is fragrance-free, uses a relatively simple glucoside-based cleansing system and closely matches Hello Charlie’s preferred ingredient and transparency criteria.
For an unscented concentrated castile soap, Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented remains a standout — but true soap is alkaline and not tear-free, so it is not automatically the best choice for every baby, particularly those with very dry or eczema-prone skin.
The biggest positive formula change in this update is Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash. The current Australian formula is materially different from the old archived version, so the previous criticism should not be copied forward unchanged.
For babies with eczema or very reactive skin, the most useful general rule is often simpler than any “natural versus synthetic” debate: use lukewarm water, keep baths short, use cleanser only where needed, and favour a mild fragrance-free cleanser. Dermatology and eczema organisations consistently recommend this approach for sensitive skin.
A simple fragrance-free glucoside-based formula with glycerin and panthenol. Our strongest current liquid wash pick.
Five-star ingredient alignment and excellent transparency, with the important caveat that true soap is alkaline and not tear-free.
The archived formula was exceptionally short and fragrance-free. Current exact formula/availability should still be checked before purchase.
Gentle cleansing system with plant oils and calendula, but natural fragrance allergens keep it at four stars.
The current Australian formula is substantially improved from the archived version and no longer contains several ingredients that drove the old criticism.
Our ratings are not a declaration that a product is “safe” or “unsafe”, and a lower rating does not mean a product is dangerous. The rating reflects how closely a formula aligns with Hello Charlie’s preferred ingredient and transparency criteria, while also considering fragrance, formula complexity, disclosure, skin sensitivity, product format and the quality of current verification.
We started with the original 73-page Hello Charlie PDF and the live article, which together documented 59 baby soaps and washes. For this 2026 update, we preserved every historical product rather than quietly deleting old reviews. Where reliable current information was available, we checked the modern formula, product status and current Hello Charlie stock position. When a current formula could not be independently verified, we say so clearly and preserve the archived formula only as historical reference.
We also changed the tone of the ingredient discussion. Older versions of many “non-toxic” articles — including our own — sometimes used very absolute language. Our current approach is more careful: natural does not automatically mean safer, synthetic does not automatically mean unsafe, and ingredient risk depends on dose, purity, formulation, route of exposure and individual sensitivity. We still apply a precautionary Hello Charlie framework, but we avoid overstating evidence.
Our strongest preference for very sensitive or eczema-prone baby skin is usually a mild, fragrance-free cleanser with good ingredient transparency. Essential oils are still fragrance ingredients and can matter for sensitive skin, even when they are natural or organic.
This table includes all 59 archived products plus two important current additions: Jack N Jill Baby Bath Wash - Fragrance Free and Weleda Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash.

Major positive reformulation
The archived formula contained petrolatum, dimethicone, steareth-20 and benzalkonium chloride. The current Australian formula checked for this update does not list those ingredients.
Major reformulation
The current formula is materially different from the archived aloe/white tea/Kakadu plum formula and now includes polysorbate 20, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, EDTA and several essential oils.
Recommendation revised
The modern formula differs from the archived version. Sodium coco-sulfate, fragrance and benzyl alcohol mean it now sits in the three-star tier under the updated Hello Charlie framework.
Reformulated, but still three stars
The formula has changed since the archived review, but fragrance, PEG/PPG ingredients and cocamidopropyl betaine remain key considerations.
Shorter current formula
The modern formula is shorter and no longer lists several botanical extracts that appeared in the archived version, while retaining essential oils and a parfum-labelled ingredient.
Updated ingredient deck
The current formula now includes colloidal oatmeal, linseed and jojoba oils with a revised preservative system; it remains a strong four-star option with essential-oil considerations.
Some products in the old PDF are discontinued, renamed, hard to find, region-specific or no longer supported by a reliable current full ingredient list. We have kept them in this article because the historical record matters — but we do not pretend that an old ingredient list is current when we cannot prove it.
Each review below shows the current product status, formula verification status, archived recommendation status, current rating, formula-change summary, ingredients or historical ingredient list, practical considerations and our updated verdict.

What To Consider: Sodium coco-sulfate, fragrance and benzyl alcohol make it less aligned with Hello Charlie’s preferred framework, especially for fragrance-sensitive skin.

The original cheat sheet reviewed 59 products and used a simpler “recommended or not recommended” style. This update keeps every historical product but introduces a more useful three-tier recommendation system. It also separates current verified formulas from historical archived formulas, flags major reformulations and avoids repeating outdated criticism where a product has changed.
Most importantly, we now use more measured ingredient language. A product is not automatically “toxic” because it contains a synthetic ingredient, and a product is not automatically ideal for a baby simply because it is natural or organic. We still prefer simpler, transparent, fragrance-free formulas for sensitive baby skin, but we explain the trade-offs rather than relying on fear.
For babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, dermatology guidance generally favours lukewarm water, short baths, cleanser only where needed and a mild fragrance-free cleanser. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends five-to-ten-minute baths for babies with eczema and using a mild fragrance-free cleanser only on dirty or smelly areas. Eczema Association Australasia similarly recommends fragrance-free products for eczema-prone skin.
That means the “best” baby wash is not always the one with the longest list of plant extracts, essential oils or superfood ingredients. For reactive skin, fewer potential triggers can be more useful.

A Hello Charlie rating reflects our own ingredient and transparency preferences. A lower rating does not mean a product is unsafe, and a higher rating does not guarantee that a product will suit every baby. Babies with eczema, allergies, broken skin, persistent rashes or ongoing irritation should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
