Fluoride Toothpaste Smackdown - Natural vs Mainstream
We know that fluoride can be controversial. But if you want fluoride in toothpaste, does that mean that you have to have all the other toxic ingredients as well?
No, it doesn't!
By choosing a natural fluoride toothpaste, you get the fluoride, but you don’t get the other nasties:
- No synthetic flavours
- No artificial colours
- No artificial sweeteners
- No sodium lauryl sulphate
- No triclosan
- No parabens
- No propylene glycol
- No titanium dioxide nanoparticles
- No microbeads
Let's take a look at two different toothpastes. One is a natural toothpaste with fluoride, the other is a mainstream fluoride toothpaste.
Grant's Natural Toothpaste with Fluoride
Ingredients: Active ingredient: Sodium Monofluorophosphate. Other ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Water (aqua), Glycerin (Vegetable), Xylitol, Silica, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate (from Coconut), Cellulose Gum, Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Spearmint Oil, Peppermint Oil, Stevioside (Stevia), Menthol, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil (Certified Organic), Magnesium Hydroxide, Potassium Chloride, Flavour/Aroma* (*Natural Herbal Extract of Mint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Cardamom, Anise, Caraway, Coriander, Rosemary and Clary Sage, Limonene and Linalool.)
There's nothing in that list of ingredients that concerns me. In fact, this is one that we use at home.
Colgate Total
Ingredients: Glycerin, Water, Hydrated Silica, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Arginine, Flavour, Zinc Oxide, Cellulose Gum, CI 77891, Poloxamer 407, Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Zinc Citrate, Benzyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Saccharin, Phosphoric Acid, Sucralose. (Fluoride ppm 1450)
The Colgate fluoride toothpaste has a few ingredients that I'm not keen on:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- Flavour
- CI 77891
- Sodium Saccharin
- Sucralose
