It all started with Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and natural scientist. He founded Weleda with Dutch doctor Ita Wegman, along with German chemist and pharmacist Oskar Schmiedel.

Biodynamic cultivation

Weleda's gardens thrive and flourish as they follow biodynamic farming guidelines.

Organic farming is a way of agriculture where you don't use any artificial chemicals, fertilisers, or pesticides on your crops. Biodynamic cultivation is the same way of farming, but also takes into account the health of the soil and the plants.

Biodynamic cultivation includes special techniques that help stimulate the life force in the soil. It's based on the idea that everything in nature is interconnected and that treating the soil, plants, animals, and humans as one unit will create a more sustainable system. It improves the health of the plants that grow in the soil, which results in better quality produce. It's like taking care of a whole person, not just their body.

Weleda raises awareness for biodiversity through educational initiatives like the Bee B&B Hotel program.

Weleda products are guaranteed natural by NaTrue, an international association that certifies natural and organic cosmetic products. NaTrue doesn't permit animal testing, so the skincare brand ensures that their products aren't tested on animals.

They're UEBT Certified Sourcing with Respect. This means they're always looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, respecting the human rights of the people who grow and cultivate their ingredients, and working to create a positive social and economic impact in the communities where they operate.

Weleda is also certified with the Look for the Zero logo, which means there are no microbeads or microplastics in the products.

Eco friendly production

The company reuses approximately 98% of all the waste produced during the manufacturing process. These are either composted, repurposed, recycled, or recovered (including waste heat recovery).

100% of the electricity used at Weleda's production facilities (sites in France, Germany, and Switzerland) comes from renewable energy solar power from their own photovoltaic system.

Sustainable, eco friendly packaging

Weleda's choice of safe materials for their packaging ensures that both the formulation and the environment are adequately protected.

They use materials like recycled glass to make their glass bottles, and FSC certified paper for their cardboard packaging. They also use aluminium tubes with a protective coating.

Sustainable Weleda Ingredients and Materials

Weleda has been working towards preserving genetic biodiversity by not using GMO plants/seeds in their gardens. This helps to maintain biodiversity and protect natural raw materials.

They source over 80% of their raw materials from certified organic farming, and with a portion of the ingredients coming from biodynamic cultivation.

All the Weleda ingredients are natural, with no synthetic preservatives and dyes. There are no petroleum derived ingredients or mineral oil in the products. They're also free from synthetic fragrances, phthalates, GMO ingredients, parabens, silicones, sulphates, triclosan, propylene glycol, and microbeads or microplastics.

Sustainable Palm Oil

Weleda was one of the first companies to require transparent sourcing of materials. Their palm oil is sourced from a single certified organic plantation in Brazil using organic farming practices that protect natural habitats. It’s also sustainably sourced under fair working conditions.

Weleda's sustainable palm oil certification is accredited by the non for profit organisation, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). They make sure that companies follow a set of environmental and social criteria to help them produce certified sustainable palm oil. These measures will help limit the damage done by palm oil farming on the environment and in palm growing areas.

Made in Europe

All of Weleda's products are made in Europe, except for medicines like baby teething powder, which are made in New Zealand.
