The scrubber is made from crushed walnut shells and 50% post-consumer recycled materials, while the sponge side is made from biodegradable and renewable plant based cellulose. Use the walnut sponge to clean unique surfaces like ceramic, porcelain, stainless steel and painted surfaces. .

I should have done my research before buying, but was being overly optimistic. There was discussion in our household as to whether "made of plant materials" meant it would be biodegradable...it's not. I ended up writing to the manufacturer to ask - apparently they are working on it, as well as on some more sustainable packaging, but they're not there yet. This sponge is on its last legs after 2 weeks, so I'd say that makes it less sustainable than the standard ones from the supermarket, which at least last longer. My quest for a sustainable dishwashing tool continues.
