W3LL PEOPLE Mascara Review

W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara - Reviewed

W3LL PEOPLE Mascara Review I'm finally getting around to doing a W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara review, as I've been using this mascara for a while now. There may be cleaner mascaras around, like the Honeybee Gardens. The Honeybee Gardens mascara scores a 1 on EWG but I have to admit that I just couldn’t love it. It was okay, and it might be better for people who don’t use lotions around their eyes, but I kept finding that the Honeybee Gardens one slid down my face every time I wore it. Plus, if I got sweaty (hello! Australian summer) the sweat would make it run into my eyes, adding red eyes to panda eyes. I know some people love this mascara, it's a reasonable price at $19.95, and it really is clean and green, but it just didn’t work for me. I bought one called Eye of Horus at my local health food store without reading the ingredients properly, and it was okay for a couple of weeks then it started irritating me. So that had to go. When we got the W3LL PEOPLE makeup range in, I was keen to try the mascara, because I’d read some pretty great reviews on it. I’d also read that it was smudgy, and that it could be difficult to remove, so I thought I’d better give it a try myself. The W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara gets a 3 on EWG,  (although the ingredients are slightly different, I calculate them to still be a 3), so there are cleaner mascaras out there, but there’s also a lot worse. I’m pretty happy with the ingredients, although I'd prefer to skip the fragrance. There’s no:
  • parabens
  • petroleum products
  • aluminium powders
  • fibres
  • coal tar
  • propylene glycol
And these are the things that you really need to look out for when you're buying mascara. Ingredients: Aqua (water), Cera Alba (Beeswax), Stearic Acid, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba Wax), Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Benzyl Alcohol, Dehydroacetic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Tocopherol, Helanthius Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Geraniol, Limonene, Parfum. May contain (+/-): CI 77499 (Iron Oxide). *USDA Organic, **QAI I know that I'm going to get questions about the benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative, and mascara is something that you really need preservatives in, because mascara tubes are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria. One study found microbial growth  (Staph bacteria) in 36.4% of mascaras after just three months of use. So trust me on this one, people, preservatives are good!

How good is the W3LL People Mascara?

How does it work? Pretty darn well, I have to say. I like black mascara, and this is nice and black. It separates my lashes nicely, and it doesn’t go all clumpy. I’ve been using this for a couple of months now, and sometimes mascara clumps when you’ve had it a while, but not this one. The brush shape is pretty cool, and it certainly helps to separate your lashes. It definitely works better when you give it a wiggle on your lashes as you’re applying. Somehow that seems to coat your lashes better. You can build this, if you’re looking for more ‘drama’ as they adverts say. Or you can just give your lashes a quick swipe so that they look natural but defined. No irritation, even if I’m sweating (and I do wear this to an exercise class that I do every week), and it doesn’t run into my eyes like the Honeybee Gardens mascara seemed to. I don’t get bits in my eyes that irritate the hell out of me, and even at the end of the day, my eyes and the skin around my eyes aren’t irritated. As to the smudging? I’ll admit that it has smudged once or twice. BUT – I know exactly why this was. I made a complete mess of my liquid eyeliner and removed the whole lot with my usual eye makeup remover – sweet almond oil – then started again. But the oily residue made everything run. I really should have cleansed my face properly and started again, but of course I was in a hurry and didn’t. And another morning I put a layer of facial oil on under my moisturiser because my skin was feeling particularly dry, and the oil around my eyes once again made my eye makeup (not just my mascara – the eyeshadow and eyeliner, too) start to gather under my eyes for a little relocation party. Usually I just put my normal moisturiser on under my eyes and I have absolutely no problem with my eye makeup or my mascara upping sticks and moving to greener pastures. w3ll people expressionist mascara review

What's the Verdict?

I guess if you have oily skin around your eyes, or you like putting oil around your eyes before you apply makeup, you might have a problem with the W3LL People Mascara. Me? I’ve given it the double thumbs up and am already on to my second tube! If you're looking for cleaner, greener mascaras that work, check out the range at Hello Charlie.
