Hairspray Smackdown: Natural vs Mainstream

Natural Hairspray Smackdown Natural vs Mainstream I'm not a big user of hairspray, but I know plenty of people who are. And if you've got children who do dance classes, exam season and concert season means hair in buns (or just slicked down for the boys) and sprayed into place. Walk backstage and you can get high from all the hairspray fumes. I've always suspected that hairspray isn't awesome, and as my kids have got ballet exams coming up, I thought that now was a good time to have a closer look at some natural hairspray! As usual with product smackdowns, I've taken a mainstream product and a natural alternative. I'm comparing VO5 Styling Spray with Andalou Naturals Sunflower Citrus Hair Spray.

Andalou Naturals Hair Spray Sunflower Citrus

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Juice*, Ethyl Alcohol*, Cyamopsis Tetragonolobus (Guar) Gum*, Sodium Alginate (Algin), Glycine Soja (Soy) Protein, Sodium PCA, Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) Extract*, Pyrus Cydonia (Quince) Extract, Fruit Stem Cells (Malus Domestica, Solar Vitis) and BioActive 8 Berry Complex*, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) and Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract*^, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) and Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Oils* (*Organic, ^Fair Trade) Price: $13.95 for 242mls (Buy at Hello Charlie) There's really nothing to get worked up about in this natural hairspray from Andalou Naturals. EWG's Skindeep database gives it a 2.

V05 Styling Spray Volume & Lift

Ingredients: Alcohol Denat., Butane, Isobutane, Propane, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Aminomethyl Propanol, Parfum (Fragrance), Vinyl Caprolactam/VP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Polyvinylcaprolactam, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzophenone-4, Limonene, Linalool, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Hexyl Cinnamal Price: 200g for $4.69 This wasn't listed on EWG's database, so I put the ingredients through the 'Build Your Own Report' function. It came out at an 8. The biggest concerns are the fragrance, and the butane, propane and isobutane. Butane, propane and isobutane are considered to be irritants for the eyes, skin and lungs. This is a big concern with an aerosol product - it's very easy to breathe it in, and to get it on your skin and in your eyes when you're spraying it around. Lilial is another skin irritant, and it shouldn't be inhaled. It's also toxic to aquatic life. Dimethicone is a silicone, and many people try to avoid these in hair products to avoid buildup. The benzophone-4 is another suspected skin, eye and lung irritant. All in all, this might hold your hair in place, but it's not a product that I want to be spraying around the place. And it's certainly not one that I want to be inhaling. What's the verdict? There's no doubt that the Andalou Naturals hairspray is a much better choice. The question with natural hairspray is whether it works. Will it make your hair sticky or stiff? Will it hold? Not being a hairspray user myself, I had a look around the web to see what user reviews were. Amazon reviews average 4.2 stars, which is pretty good. So if you're a hairspray fan looking for a natural alternative, the Andalou Naturals hairspray seems to be a good alternative. I'll be adding it to my ballet makeup and hair arsenal for concert time! Have you tried a natural hairspray? What's your recommendations?
